AP Environmental Science Summer Assignment 2011

The goal of this course to develop an understanding of the world we live in and the impact we have on it, as well as to prepare you for the Advanced Placement Environmental Science Exam in April 2012. Due to the enormity of the curriculum to be tested, it is very difficult to cover everything before the exam. Therefore, over the summer it is necessary that we begin the curriculum. Your assignment for this summer is the following, DUE AT THE BEGINNNING OF THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS, NO EXCEPTIONS:

1  Preview: what is Environmental Science? Why are you taking this course? In one to two paragraphs, define what you think Environmental Science is, why it is useful to study, and what you hope to gain from this course.

Read Chapters 1 and 25 of your text book Environment: Peter H. Raven 6th Edition.

*Note: The first page of each chapter is shaded green, make sure you read this page, DO NOT skip over it.

3  Complete the “Review” questions at the end of each section within the chapters.

4  Complete the following “Thinking about the Environment” questions at the end of the chapters.

Chapter 1: (page 22) # 1-6, 9, 10 and 12

Chapter 25: (page 599) # 1-7 and 9-13

Learn by Doing: Put it in Writing. Choose two recent newspaper, magazine, or Internet articles describing an environmental problem the world currently faces. Summarize the article/issues and formulate comments, connections and questions (CCQs). The original article must be attached to your response.

6  Fill-in the template for the “I see, It Means” on the accompanying page, relating the cartoon caption to what you have read and understood in Chapters 1 and 25.

**Be sure to print the template and complete it so that you can submit it with the rest of your summer assignments.
