AP Human Geography - 1st Quarter Project
The first quarter project is connected to Unit 2: Population and Migration.
Part I:
1.)Interview a family member who has migrated, moved or relocated. This could be as big as a grandparent who left Communist Europe during the Cold War, or as small as a parent moving from West Virginia to Virginia for a job. You can also interview a family member about a deceased member of your family (i.e. you have an ancestor who came over on the Mayflower or something along those lines).
Part II:
2.)The second part of your project will be an analysis of your subject's movement. In your analysis, be sure to use the technical lingo.
Be sure to include:
- Analyze the push and pull factors. Consider economical, cultural, and environmental pushes and pulls. When explaining the pull factors consider both the nation and the region your subject settled in.
- Which types of diffusion were present in your subjects move?
- Was it an example of chain migration? Explain why or why not.
- Is your subject an example of international migration or internal migration? If it is internal, is it interregional or intraregional? Was it forced or voluntary?
- Consider cultural diffusion…. How did your subject hold onto aspects of their own culture? What did they pick up from their new culture? Discuss acculturation and assimilation if relevant.
- How did migration laws play a factor in your subjects move? If they didn’t play a role, why is that?
Attached to your paper, you should include the following:
1.)a map of the region/country they left behind
2.)a map of the region/country where they moved
You must have a minimum of 3 sources and include a works cited page.
