Weird Science:

Researching and Evaluating the Impact of Scientific Progress

As we continue our discussions regarding scientific discovery from Frankenstein into The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, this seemed like a great opportunity to develop and explore related concepts that interest you. Please select ONE scientific development (either from class discussion/activity or on your own) to research, write about, and ultimately present to your peers. You should be prepared to discuss both the positive and negative potential ramifications of this development but also to take a position on how and how much we should embrace and utilize this knowledge moving forward. The following steps should guide you through the process:

Step 1:

Select a topic that you find interesting. Please submit a written thesis by the Monday you return from Spring Break. Due March 19th

Step 2: Create an annotated bibliography in MLA format with a minimum of eight sources that you may decide to use for your essay. Due Tuesday, March 27th. This will be a major grade.

Step 3:

Compose an argumentative paper that considers both the benefits and the detriments of a particular scientific technology but ultimately develops a position on how we should utilize it moving forward. You must utilize at least four sources, at least one of which must be Frankenstein or The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. This must be formatted properly in MLA style and include a works cited page (no annotations this time). It should be three to four pages long, and it will be due Thursday, April 5th. This will be your first major grade of the sixth six weeks.

Step 4: Presentations (details to follow)

This process will be challenging but, I hope, ultimately rewarding. It should allow you to develop academic research skills as well as to practice synthesis and argumentative techniques we’ve been working on for some time now. I’m excited to see what you come up with!
