AP Biology: Amino Acid Poster DUE: Wednesday, 9/16 (tentative)

Each student will be assigned an amino acid. For your amino acid, prepare:

1.  Poster - Create a poster showing the structural formula of the molecule. SHOW ALL BONDS so that we can get an idea of the size of each amino acid (Will hang on the wall for reference throughout year). The height of each element should be about 1” tall. On your poster, identify the carboxyl group, amino group, and R group. Also identify any additional functional groups that may be in the R group (See Functional Group Reference Sheet).

2.  Information Card – Create an information card on a 5”x8” index card that contains the following information:

·  Describe the chemical and physical properties – Nonpolar or polar? Hydrophobic or hydrophilic? Acidic, basic, or neutral?

·  Discuss any functional groups (see Fig 4.10) in the R group

·  Any information about its significance in living organisms – Essential or nonessential?

·  Any other relevant information, any unique characteristics of your specific amino acid

·  References citing resources used (on the BACK of card)
