Tips on completing an application form:

When completing an application form take the approach that the person reading it does not know the intricacies of the various terms/ procedures/ systems/ requirements etc, soprovide an explanation.Always ask yourself “Have I clearly demonstrated HOW I have met the criteria”

Do not assume the shortlisting panel know because, as stated, only the information you provide on your application form is taken into account at the shortlisting meeting, applications are anonomised and assumptions cannot be made.

Do not simply state your job title(s) held, ensure you provide dates and/or duration to demonstrate how long you held a particular role. If you were temporarily promoted/acting up state the reason(s) why e.g. line manager on leave. Where requested, detail theprocedures, terms, systems, requirements etcyou have experience of and are familiar with.

Examples:

The job title is stated but no information on how holding that post has meant that the requested experience has been gained = it will have failed the criteria as the panel does not fill in the missing information.

When asked about knowledge and practical application of certain procedures, only the title of a course attended is listed – this does not actually demonstrate how much is known and practically applied in the working environment = failed to meet the criteria.

Application forms

Job application forms determine whether or not you will make it to the next stage of the recruitment process and are therefore very important. There is little point returning poor quality application forms. You should focus on making an intelligent, insightful and outstanding job application. As far as numbers of job applications go, it is certainly better to produce quality rather than quantity.

Spelling on your application

Correct spelling, structure and clear expression are the most basic and most important prequisite of any application form. If people cannot express themselves within a written application form they have had an unlimited amount of time to produce, it implies that they don’t check their work or care about the work they do.

Make your application form stand out

It is important to make yourself and your application stand out. At the same time you need to get the balance right: coming across as too "zany" will not benefit your application. You want to demonstrate the same level of professionalism you would show at interview, or actually doing your job once employed, on your application form.

If you won an award at university or achieved the highest A-Level marks in the country, put it in your application form. Make sure you use every detail from your life and experiences to your advantage in your application form.

Check your application!

Before you let your form leave your sight, have someone else read it over and check it for you. They may be able to spot mistakes that you have missed or advise you on how to phrase something better.

Accurate applications

Never lie on your application form. Interviews are designed to be probing and are likely to catch you out if you fabricate your answer. Any sign of dishonesty will be looked upon severely. If you are offered the position, you will be required to provide references and original certificates of your qualifications. Make sure your application form is an accurate account of your life, experiences and qualifications.
