The Women’s Cottage is a community based information, resource, referral and advocacy service run by women for the women and children of the Hawkesbury District. RESPONSIBLE TO:The Women’s Cottage Collective
HOURS OF WORK:25 hrsper week in contract position for 12 months. Position to be reviewed at 12 months based on funding.
ANTI VIOLENCE PROJECT WORKER
Selection Criteria
The Anti Violence Project Worker has the responsibility for being involved in community development and education activities that raise awareness about the effects of violence in communities and reduce violence against women and children. She will also provide some groups and domestic violence support to individual women to recover their lives from the effects of violence.
Essential Criteria
- Relevant Tertiary qualifications
- Experience in working with women who have experienced violence and abuse
- Experience in advocacy and knowledge of issues affecting women
- Understanding of and commitment to feminist principles
- Experience in project planning, development and evaluation
- Experience in community development and community education
- Experience in group work and domestic violence support
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Driver’s license and use of a comprehensively insured vehicle.
Desirable Criteria
- Foundations Domestic Violence Training
- Up to date knowledge about legislation relating to women and violence and child protection
- Knowledge about Hawkesbury area and its services
- Experience in events management
- The Womens Cottage considers being a woman a genuine occupational qualification for this position under s.31 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
ANTI VIOLENCE PROJECT WORKER
Job Description
The Role of Anti Violence projectworker involves taking a key role in community development and education projects and activities that raise awareness about the effects of violence in communities and reduce violence against women and children. This position also involvesfront desk work in providing crisis support, giving information and making appropriate referrals.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Networks and Partnerships
- To liaise with the Regional Domestic Violence Network (Metwest)and attend relevant meeting as a representative of HANADV & The Womens Cottage.
- To attend the local Hawkesbury Action Network Against Domestic Violence (HANADV) and take a key role in implementing related activities.
- To actively participate and attend the local Hawkesbury Sexual Violence Prevention Network (HSVPN) and take a key role related activities.
- To participate in supporting other organisations that provide services to Hawkesbury women & children whose lives have beeneffected by violence.
- To represent and involve the Women’s Cottage in local anti violence events & campaigns eg:-
- Stop DV Day
- Day of Action Against Sexual Assault
- Reclaim the Night
- 16 Days of Activism for the Elimination of Violence Against Women’s & Children
- Other relevant campaigns (as approved by HAWKS)
Service Delivery
- To act as an advocate for women and children with other agencies and departments
- To plan, implement and evaluate 1-2 groups per term using evidence based practice.
- To produce and distribute promotional materials including newsletter
- To provide short term domestic violence support for women who have or who are experiencing violence using a client centred approach.
To ensure that each woman who visits or phones the Centre is promptly and courteously attended to and that phone messages are responded to or passed on as soon as possible
To provide appropriate referrals for women & children using client centred and localised approach.
To provide appropriate assessment for welfare assistance both in services and by referral.
To take a case management approach where appropriate and provide this information for follow up support to women and children to the other WAVE workers
- Additional hours will be allocated to back up to the resource workers on Front Desk as required.
- After hours and some weekend work may be required in this this position.
Organisational Tasks
- To attend staff meetings as required
- To participate in The Women’s Cottage organisational development by:
- Attending planning meetings
- Attending team building activities events etc
- In collaboration with the Manager to submit applications for funding and grants related to Anti Violence and specifically violence against women projects and activities.
- To supervise students (and volunteers) in the organisation as appropriate.
Administrative Tasks
- To develop a work plan in line with the organisational strategic plan and job description.
- To provide a quarterly worker report for the Management Collective
- In collaboration with the Financial Administrator and Manager to develop and maintain budgets for relevant anti violence projects and activities.
- To provide an annualreport workers report for the organisation’s Annual Report
- To ensure that the Cottage is ready for opening each day eg check milk, make sure dishes are done, paper bins are emptied, check and prepare rooms if booked, open windows, put out chairs.
- Close up, lock Cottage, bring in chairs etc. at the end of each shift
- To check and record the messages on the answer machine during each roster
- To keep statistics of phone enquiries, visits, requests and referrals
- To maintain client files as per the File Keeping Policy and Procedure
- To record appointments, confirmation of appointments and cancellations for any practitioner or groups for whom the Cottage has taken that responsibility
Training and Development
- To maintain professional development as negotiated at annual appraisal
- To attend regular internal and external supervision for professional development and practice as negotiated.
Accountability
- To adhere to current child protection legislation
- To abide by HAWKS, policies and procedures
- Accept direction from and be accountable to the Manager for the day to day conduct of the service and the HAWKS collective for the governance of the Service.
- Any other duties as directed by the Manager
