The “Timeline of Faith in America” has a detailed layout of all major religious related events in the history of America from the past 400 years! Use the “Jump to” drop box to help navigate the extensive timeline. (For more information about the Antebellum Reform Era you can view episode two which is streamed online – 56mins.)

Use the timeline events from 1800 to 1858 to answer the following questions:

1.)  Second Great Awakening:

What is the fastest growing denomination in America? How did this religion spread their ideas? Who were welcomed to participate in this religion? (1800)

Describe the Cane Revival.

What is the second fastest growing denomination? (1814)

How did Evangelist use the newest print technology?

What’s the origin of the Seventh Day Adventist Church? (1844)

2.)  Utopian Sects

Describe the founding of Mormonism (1820) & include their founder.

Describe the different millennial ideas of the Shakers & Oneida. (1830)

What are the Mormons also called? (1847)

Where did they settle and why did they have to settle there? (1847)

Who established their theocratic society? (1847)

3.)  Education:

How is the education reform movement related to religion? How is the public school curriculum influenced by religion? (1824)

4.)  Temperance:

1826 – Evangelical Protestants found American Temperance Society (summarize the movement from the description and make sure to include the people involved).

5.)  Abolition

Why was slave worship curtailed in America in 1831? What event caused this? (1831)

What groups founded the American Anti-Slavery Society in 1833? Describe William Lloyd Garrison’s statement in the first issue of The Liberator.

In 1836 Angelina Grimke asks women to “save” society. What is her rational to have women lead the charge to change society?

1850 “Harriet Tubman” – click on the link of her name, explain how she escaped. Into freedom and who helped her?

6.)  Women’s Rights

1848 The Women’s rights convention at Seneca Falls. Who are the major players at the convention? What do they write? What is the main idea of the document?

Three years after the Seneca Falls convention… Who is giving a speech? What is her background and the name of her speech? What is the argument presented in the speech? (1848)

Task: Create one facebook page for one of the following reform movements (The Second Great Awakening, Abolition, Women’s Rights)
