Dear Teacher of Japanese,
- All divisions of the speech competition will be held on Friday 28 July at the Ryan Community Centre in two venues (the main church hall and meeting rooms beside the hall)
- The three divisions are:
Primary Speech Competition will be years 4-6 and Primary Open
Junior Secondary Division will be years 7-10
Senior Secondary Division will be years 11- 12 and Senior Open
- There will be an Overall Winner for the three divisions i.e. the student scoring the highest points for each of the three divisions and a perpetual shield for the three divisions.
- Two divisions will run consecutively at approximately the following times depending on the number of contestant. Times will be revised closer to the date and finalization of the program.

- Aim of the Contest
The main aim of the contest is to encourage those students who are studying Japanese as their chosen Language, the opportunity of demonstrating and extending their language skills in an atmosphere of friendly competition with other like-minded students. It also allows students to gain both confidence and experience in expressing and communicating their own ideas in the target language in a public speaking context. Lastly, it provides those students involved in the competition, the rare opportunity to listen to and to critique the speeches of other learners, both more and less experienced than themselves.

PRIMARY DIVISION SPEECH CONDITIONS
- Speeches are set. Students are to use the set speech for their grade level.
- Nouns may be changed but no additional information is to be added.
- Excessive deviations from the set speeches will result in marks being deducted.
- School uniform is to be worn.
- Props or costumes may NOT be used。Marks will be deducted.
- Contestants may refer to their notes. However, excessive consultation will result in marks being deducted.
- Each school is permitted two contestants in each year level. Students should compete at the level at which they are currently studying Japanese e.g. if a student is studying Japanese at Year Five level, they compete in the Year Five category
- If a school has a vacancy in a certain year level, a student/s in the younger year level can fill in the higher vacant spot.

The speech title should be noted on the Registration Form.
Japanese background speakers from any school, not just schools studying Japanese, are welcome to register. (In these cases, students may be entered as a miscellaneous student under their school’s name and will be expected to wear the uniform of their school, and be supervised by their school’s teachers. The charge for miscellaneous students will be $5 per student.)

- Points will be deducted for contestant’s use of grammatical structures and complex sentences beyond their knowledge and understanding. Language complexity should be a reflection of the contestant’s years of language learning and topics studied in their year level.
- Contestants may not read their speeches. Contestants may refer to their notes. However, excessive consultation will result in marks being deducted.
- Each contestant should announce his/her name and speech title.
- School uniform should be worn.
- Students may not use the same speech as presented in previous years; this includes title and content.
- Each school is allowed to have up to two contestants in each year level. Students should compete at the level at which they are currently studying Japanese e.g. if a student is studying Japanese at Year Nine level, they compete in the Year Nine category however if a school has a vacancy in a certain year level, a student/s in a younger year level can fill in the vacant spot.

SECONDARY DIVISION Year 11 – 12 and Open Division SPEECH TOPICS
The speech must be the original work of the contestant. The degree of assistance given by teachers or by native speakers should be limited to correcting grammatical errors in the student’s own written work or making minor alterations to the text for the sake of cohesion.
Contestants may base their speeches on topics studied in their school’s work program.
The contestant’s use of grammatical structures and level of sentences complexity should be a reflection of their language learning of topics studied in their year level.
Each contestant should announce his/her name and speech title in Japanese.

SENIOR and OPEN SECONDARY DIVISIONSSPEECH CONDITIONS
- The speech must be the original work of the contestant. The degree of assistance given by teachers or by native speakers should be limited to correcting grammatical errors or making minor alterations to the text for the sake of cohesion.
- Props (for example puppets, objects etc.) may not be used.
- No digital devices are allowed.
- Points will be deducted if the speaker is significantly under or over the prescribed time allocated. Two points will be deducted from the overall points awarded.
- A recorder will monitor the time for each speech.
- Points will be deducted for contestant’s use of grammatical structures and complex sentences beyond their knowledge and understanding. Language complexity should be a reflection of the contestant’syears of language learning and topics studied in their year level.
- Contestants may not read their speeches. Contestants may refer to their notes. However, excessive consultation will result in marks being deducted.

- Teaching staff will assist with collation of results and writing of certificates.
- Aggregate of marks from all judges will determine the place allocated to each contestant in order 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc
- In the case of a draw in points, the judges will determine the outcome through discussion.
- The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. The content of the judges’ discussion is not available to the public on the day or after the contest.

AWARDS
- All contestants will receive a participation certificate.
- Certificates and prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner in each year level.
- The contestant with the highest number of points overall in the Primary Division (Years 4 – 6 & Primary Open); in the Junior Secondary Division (Years 7 – 10) and the Senior Secondary Division & Secondary Open (Years 11 – 12) will be declared the Overall Winner of the Primary/Junior Secondary/Senior Secondary School Division of the Japanese Speech Competition.The winning contestant will receive a trophy for him/herself as well as the perpetual shield, which will be held by his/her school until 2018.
- Medallions will be awardedto students who have participated for four years in the Townsville and District Speech Competition. They will receive a second medal after 8 years of participation. Participation does not have to be consecutive years.
