2015

AWARDS 2015

This is the opportunity for those individuals who have had an exceptional year to be recognised for their achievements. It is our opportunity to tell them how well they have done. There can be no greater feeling than for those achievements to be acknowledged by your peers.

To make the list of nominations is an achievement in itself and demonstrates that one or others in the club believed that you stood out for what you have done.

Please consider the nominations and cast your vote as soon as possible during the evening. The awards will be at the culmination of the evening.

Nominations

Club Member of the Year

The Club Member of the Year is someone who has gone the extra mile for the club and the members; who does a lot behind the scenes; a driving force within the club who always seems to be around doing things and inspires and encourages others.

Dave Sawyer

Dave for all the work behind the scenes he does, with affiliation for both seniors and juniors, for the grand prix and checking every week what races everyone has done and updating member results, which has 700 entries on the list so far in 2015.

Despite everything he has gone through he is always there to help anyone.

Ean Parsons

Starting the Harriers and having the skill and motivation to develop the club in to what it has become today. Along with the hundreds of hours he has given to the club to make it happen. He has never allowed his name to be put in for this award, I hope he does this year!

Amazing work done by Ean , from coaching , to on the committee to planning race training plans and basically there for any advice and organising club races

Will Ean delete this nomination before the voting starts? If he does, then there’s no point me writing anything else, despite the fact that he should again be a front runner in this category for the huge range of work that he does on behalf of our club.

The club hosting the North Eastern XC championships is down to Ean’s hard work (along with others) and belief that it is possible.

Ean’s coaching has seen the adult section grow from strength to strength in the last year, in both ability and size. His coaching has produced a massive number of pb’s in the adult section this year, the training sessions may seem tough at times and we do grumble but we know that we will thank him for it on race day.

Ean has given 10 years of outstanding service to the club, as both chairman and coach. He has strived to develop others and drive the club forward.

Tracy Brown

Tracy helps in so many different ways, from leading the Minis, helping with the Minors, the Serpentine, now secretary for FoSH, and helping at the handicap.

Always there, always smiling, takes on more and more each year and really enjoys what she does.

Constantly happy, helpful and encouraging. Runs herself and organises runs for the club.

Steve Foreman

Looking after the Serpentine and now chair of FoSH, which he has put hours of work in to.

Since joining the club in the early days Steve has been committed to helping out in whatever areas he was able to support. He is a very humble man and finds it difficult to take praise for all the work he does with the Harriers lots of it unseen. He does an amazing job with the Serpentine race. What an asset to the club he is!

Steve organised and managed the Serpentine run again in 2015, he is also involved with FOSH and he does Parkrun directing on a Saturday. I don’t know how he fits it all in!

Paula Warwick

Paula is always there, with juniors helping out, at events, sorting teams and the annual dinner, thanks Paula!

Here, here and everywhere!

She is a dedicated athlete who has given her time to partake in coaching qualifications for developing both junior and senior members.

She is always happy to assist in any event that the harriers organise including organising the club presentation.

Whilst also managing to train for a marathon.

She completed 2 marathons and no matter what life has thrown at her this year she’s always there to talk to members help out with marshalling, BBQ, Beer festival, Annual Dinner, coaching. Paula just inspires everyone.

She does a lot of work for the club behind the scenes, tries to pull runners of all abilities into running and is always trying to make it all look prettier!

Paula seems to be involved with so much that is going on with the club. Always offering encouragement too.

Andrew Featherstone

In his first year and already a solid member and well established in the club and will only get better.

Ray Carmichael

He has completed his first 3 marathons this year, he is always looking to support others, and he is always on hand to help out where he can.

Kev Archbold

Kev puts in a huge amount of work into the club and volunteers a lot of his time. He’s always enthusiastic and massively supportive.

As well as running his own multi-discipline session on a Wednesday, Kev is often found coaching or helping with the Monday, Tuesday and Thursday sessions showing his dedication to the club. He often volunteers at club events, is a member of the committee and all round super guy.

Someone everyone can rely on! Attends training sessions, supports other coaches and takes on coaching sessions when Ean is unavailable. Also completing his Athletics Coach course!

Jane Spink

Always there.Always enthusiastic.An inspiration.

Working with Junior Harriers (planning & delivering weekly sessions) & parkrun alongside setting (& achieving) personal goals in marathon running, always smiling and always supporting others, seniors & juniors alike.

Chris Hearmon

Always in the thick of the action – competing, coaching, supporting, organising or officiating. Chris does an enormous amount of work for our club and richly deserves this award

Gary Thwaites

Gary features in all aspects of the club racing, encouraging, organising, volunteering and supporting. He has the club at heart. And he organises the successful Hamsterley marathon and trail races. And he’s a great ambassador for the club.

Nominations

Club Runner of the Year

The Runner of the Year will be someone who has trained hard, attended regular sessions, raced a lot in the club vest and represented the club, performed well, achieved pb's, and inspired and enthused others.

Gary Thwaites

He has now completed his 51st marathon some achievement or possibly madness. Gary is always willing to partake in any events to make a complete team.

50 marathons in less than a year! There is nothing else to say other than AWESOME!

Incredible to see some one run 50 plus marathons some times week after week.

Does he ever stop running?

The man has just run his 50th marathon! More than half of those were done this year. Astonishing.

Our very own marathon maestro has not only put in some outstanding performances on his way to clocking up 50 completions of the classic distance, but he has also turned out in the club vest on many occasions at various other races. Gary also provides brilliant support to other club members, selflessly helping them to achieve their own goals in the marathon.

Reaching the magic ‘50’ marathons shows how dedicated/mad Gary is. His times and frequency of running these marathons are amazing and are something that all members of the club admire.

Gary aka ‘Marathon Man’ has had an exceptional year including recently completing his 50th Marathon, a club record. All all round good egg who helps others too.

Constantly trained hard and ran well. Helped and inspired other club members . Wears the club vest with pride and loves the Harriers.

Jane Spink

Jane has worked so hard and against injury to achieve a sub 4 hours marathon, well done Jane you did it!

Paula Warwick

For her sheer determination for her first marathon, and for her second one with only 2 weeks training and following illness only 17 minutes slower!

James Oldfield

Mr Sedgefield not just representing the club but putting the club on the map with performances, times and placings.

Had an amazing year and always looks to be better.

He is such an inspiration he works hard for every race and looks at how he can do better.

Fantastic consistent running all year, 115 for half marathona speed machine

James continues to excel at every race distance he tackles, from 100m on the track to the half marathon. He sets himself tough targets, trains diligently and gets results – an example for Harriers of all ages to follow.

Paul Weir

He's not very good at blowing his own trumpet, and tends to tell people when he hasn't done well.

He's got amazing PBs for half marathon and 10k this year as well as the all important Parkrun PB. And let's face it, now he's old and doddery, this is an even bigger achievement!

He's also ran a million races all year- some of the big ones but also supporting some obscure ones too.

Has had a fantastic season running this year some super times in the Grand Prix races.

Sue Dobson

Sue is a great runner going from strength to strength! Her hard work and determination is really paying off as her times are getting quicker and quicker!

Deborah Pennick

She trains hard attending S&C, as well as training sessions. she has entered a wide variety of races, including the grand prix series and GNR, as well as trail races. Her times keep on improving and she encourages everyone including her dad!

Endless training and endless races, improving in each & every race she completes & challenging herself at different distances.

Deb has made a real impact since she joined the club. Deb works hard in training and is reaping the reward competing in distances from 5km up to half marathon. Deb shows what can be achieved when you make a real commitment to running. Well done Debs.

Paul Glaister

Paul's running this year has been exceptional. He has turned up for all the events and always performed well.

Sheree Lyons

She is determined to always get better, keep fitter and keep smiling!

Ray Carmichael

Ray continues to make excellent progress as a runner and this year moved up to the marathon distance for the first time with a great run at York. There’s barely a race in the region that he doesn’t run and he also contributes a lot more to the club, in and out of competition.

Achieving three marathons in 2 months and getting a PB having never ran one before!

Justin Cox

2:49 at Manchester and great times at every distance.

Chris Lines

Chris puts everything into his running and is always well up in races. He’s had a great year competing in distances from 5k to marathon – in which he got a pb. He puts in some great times and is proud to wear the vest.

Track and Field Athlete of the Year

The Field Event Athlete of the Year is someone who has represented the club in throws, jumps, sprints, hurdles, middle distance or distance track events and who has performed well and inspired others.

James Oldfield

For “just having a go” at javelin and throwing 33.92m at Gateshead.

James is a great representative of the club in Athletics. He is eager to beat club records on the track and he always pushes himself. James is a great sportsman and he is even willing to try out new sports - such as his go at the Steeplechase - a true sportsman!

James became NYSD(?) Steeplechase champion

Jane Spink

She participates in both track and field events and is happy to compete in any event she is ranked 9th for javelin in v35 and 343 overall and for 3k 102 v35 in the UK ranking for 2015.

It was inspiring to hear the success Jane has had this year I don’t know a great amount about Track and Field but I know Jane has done really well over the year.

Running 3km track and 1st Sedgefield Harrier and taking part in shot put – throwing farthest distance for women in the club

Paul Glaister

For taking part in throws and on the track. He won the shot putt the first time he ever held one.

Paul has competed in both track and field this year and surprised even himself with the strength of his performances.

Paul Weir

Vet 10,000m champion for 2015.

Tracy Henderson

Great all round athlete

Paul & Tracy Glaister

I know that’s two people, but I can’t separate them. They both appear to have thrown themselves (and the odd javelin) into the track and field season this year, performing well and inspiring others.

For his achievement of 50 marathons

51+ marathons!!!! Astonishing.

His phenomenal mental & physical achievements in marathons & ultra-marathons this past year,

Gary is such an unassuming gentleman who is always happy to support and encourage many fellow members whilst running mile after mile often across hard terrain.

How many marathons in one year, bloody loads, and all around the same consistent time

Completion of his 50th marathon and 51st, probably his 52nd before the night of the dinner. That takes a huge personal commitment and dedication to the sport. Gary also achieved a first place along the way and inspired others in the marathon distance to.
