The ‘ Liceo Statale Piero Gobetti’ ,based in Fondi (LT),Italy, conscious of the importance of the teaching of Ancient Greek to younger generation of students, is announcing the tenth edition of
Αγών Gobetti
Π ο λ ι τ ε ί α κ α ὶ Π ο λ ι̃ τ α ι (Costituzione e Cittadini)
(12-14 Aprile 2018)
a translation contest from Ancient Greek to Italian ,this year on an international basis, of a prose passage from one of the renowned works of Plato, Aristotle or the Classical Age orators.
The purpose of Αγών Gobetti is:
● to foster a critical thinking of Constitutional law from a historical-juridical perspective as
a)a guarantee of human rights
b)fair exercise of one’s individual liberties
c)re-discovery of the value of citizenship
● to direct the attention of the younger generations to an understanding of ‘civic ethos’
● to revitalize the study of classical thought, promoting excellence
● to reflect upon the relationship of continuity/alterity between classical antiquity and the contemporary world.
Attendance
The Αγών Gobetti is specifically addressed to high school students attending the penultimate or last year of ‘Liceo Classico’ in Italy or the last or penultimate year of a foreign school where Ancient Greek is taught and translated (having achieved a mark of 8-10 in this subject).
Due to administrative restrictions, the maximum number of participants is limited to no more than 50 students (two students per school) who must be accompanied by their teacher/s (the presence of an accompanying teacher is compulsory in case the age of the participant students is below 18).
The date of receipt of the application form will account for admission to the competition.
● The present (forwarding) school will bear the cost of insurance for participant students and their accompanying teachers from departure to arrival.
● Each group of students-teachers is to subscribe to the Αγών Gobetti a registration fee of 60 euros to be forwarded to Conto della Tesoreria Unica n. 312673 addressed to Liceo Statale ‘Piero Gobetti’,Fondi (LT)

● 28 February 2018: deadline within which schools are to send their enrolment for ‘Αγών Gobetti to Liceo ‘P.Gobetti’,Fondi by means of the enclosed form (the date of the postmark will be credited)to the following address:Liceo Statale ‘Piero Gobetti’-via Gobetti 2 04022-Fondi(LT).
● Thursday 12 April 2018- afternoon: participant students and their accompanying teachers will be welcome
● Friday 13 April 2018-morning: the translation exam will take place
● Friday 13 April 2018-afternoon: guided tour of the town of Fondi
● Saturday 14 April 2018-morning: roundtable –exam correction –prize ceremony at the end of which guests will be leaving.
Exam
The Judging Committee will submit to the contestants a prose passage from the works of Plato, Aristotle or one of the Classical Age orators to be translated from Ancient Greek into Italian and complemented with a written commentary in Italian .Students from foreign schools will be allowed to use the following five languages: English, French, Spanish and German. The exam duration is 5 hours. Participants will be allowed to use the following dictionaries for consultation: Ancient Greek-Italian; Ancient Greek-English; Ancient Greek-French; Ancient Greek –Spanish; Ancient Greek-German.
Contestants will bring their passports or ID cards with them to be identified.
Hospitality
Participant students and their accompanying teacher/s ,who will arrive by train will be met at Fondi railway station (Stazione FS) from 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm on Thursday 12 April 2018 by the organizers of the competition. For those reaching destination by other means of transport, the meeting place is :Liceo Gobetti,via Gobetti 2 from 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm on the same day. For participant students and their accompanying teacher/s covering a distance in a time which exceeds two hours travel, the costs of accommodation and meals at some of the hotels or bed and breakfasts in town will be borne by the organizing institution of the competition. The schools of participant students will have to bear the costs of the journey and travel.
Prizes and certificates
The Committee, who will be made up essentially of university teachers, will judge the students’ texts .A prize will be awarded to the five students who will have written the best texts.
Prizes will be as follows:
E 700 ranked first
E 600 ranked second
E 500 ranked third
E 400 ranked fourth
E 300 ranked fifth
Special mentions of honour will be given by the Committee
All candidates will receive a certificate of participation which, in the case of Italian students, will be part of the student’s personal ‘curriculum’ ,as recognition for ‘esame di Stato’.
Complementary activities to Αγών Gobetti
During their stay in Fondi some cultural initiatives will be set up for participant students and their accompanying teachers.
The detailed programme of the activities of Αγών Gobetti will be available on the school website from 31 March 2018.

Regulation
Art 1. The test will consist of a translation from Ancient Greek of a passage taken from the works of Plato and / or Aristotle and / or the orators of the classical age and in the commentary of the passage itself, in which the competitor will illustrate the historical - literary and linguistic aspects, focusing the attention on the themes. Foreign competitors will be permitted to translate and comment in one of the following languages: Italian, English, French, Spanish and German.
Art 2 For each Italian or European high school, not more than two students enrolled in 4th and 5th year classes who have been promoted to the class they are attending with a minimum mark of 8/10 in Greek, are eligible for participation in the competition. The Liceo Classico and Linguistico Piero Gobetti, as promoter of the initiative, will be able to participate with two candidates.
Art 3 Maximum 50 pupils will be admitted to participate. In the case of a higher number of requests for participation, the date of the postmark will be credited.
Applications for admission must be written in simple form and signed by both the Assistant Professor and the Principal.
Art 4 The Principal of each of the high schools concerned will send the applications for registration to the competition, together with the declaration of possession of the requirements set out in Article 2 of this Regulation, to Liceo Statale “Piero Gobetti” Via Gobetti, 2 04022 Fondi (LT), within the deadline of 28 February 2018. Applications received after the expiration date will not be considered.
Art 5 Each delegation will have to pay an entry fee of Euro 60,00 on the Treasury Unic Account no. 312673 of the Scuola Statale 'Piero Gobetti' of Fondi. The receipt of the payment must be attached to the application for participation.
Art 6 The attendance of an Assistant Professor is compulsory only in the case of participation in the contest of pupils under 18 years of age.
Art 7 The test, which will take place in accordance with the rules of public competitions, will be held on April 13, 2018 and will last for five hours (8.30 - 13.30). Only the use of dictionaries (Greek-Italian, Greek-English, Greek-French, Greek-German, Greek-Spanish) will be granted.
Competitors must present themselves at 8.00 am with a valid identification document.
Art 8 The Judging Committee, nominated by the promoting High School, chaired by Professor Massimo Di Marco, Full Professor of Ancient Greek Literature at La Sapienza University of Rome, will be made up of University Professors and, for foreign students, also by English-speaking teachers, French, Spanish and German language of the Liceo Piero Gobetti. For prejudicial reasons the teachers of the High Schools attended by the competitors, cannot, in any case, be part of the Committee.
Art 9 The Judging Committee, upon completion of the evaluation of the trials, will form the ranking of the five winners, to whom the following prizes will be awarded:

The Evaluation Committee may report a maximum of five other competitors deserving a special mention. Winning competitors will be given a diploma, those deserving of special mention will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement, and others a Certificate of Participation.
The awards ceremony, which will take place on Saturday, April 14, 2018 - at 12.30 pm will conclude the program of welcome activities related to the initiative.
N.B. The winners of the Agone project are automatically enrolled in the Olympics of Classical Languages and Civilizations that take place in May.
Art 10 Participating pupils and accompanying teachers will enjoy boarding and accommodation in local accommodation facilities, subject to the institution organizing the competition, only if the distance to travel exceeds two hours of travel.
Travel expenses, however, will be borne by the participants and accompanying persons.
The accompanying teachers will have double rooms, multiple rooms instead for the students.
N.B. Accompanying people who wish to take advantage of single room accommodation will have to pay for the supplement themselves, but the organization does not guarantee the possibility to be accommodated in the same hotel structure as their competitors
