C As comprehension increases, use “modified cloze” activity. (Animated Alphabet Story, Song, and Action Book p.162)

II.  Introducing an Animated Literacy Character (30 min.)

A.  Read Related Literature: Use either suggested literature in the teacher’s guide (Story Song and Action Book, p. 47) or your own related selection to introduce a character.

B.  Storytelling: Tell or read the Animated Literature character’s story.

C.  Echo Singing: Use echo singing to teach the Animated Literacy character’s song and accompanying motions.

D.  Tracking: Have students track the words at the bottom of the picture with a finger as they echo the song a second time.

E.  Sound Substitutions: After introducing a sound, have fun using the sound to create words in a pattern song. (Story Song and Action Book, p.38) *Note: Reading aloud Oh The Thinks You Can Think or If I Ran the Zoo by Dr. Seuss, No Such Things by Bill Peet or Jabberwocky by Lewis Carrol in conjunction with this activity will help students realize that real authors sometimes play with sounds to make up words when they write.

F.  Draw,Write & Color: The students color the character’s picture. The sheet is then torn out and taken home and students teach the song and gesture to their families. Students may write a story or related picture on a separate paper.
