Andrée (Fanny), Kirsch - De Mesmaeker
Present position:
"Full Professor" at the Free University of Brussels (ULB) in the Chemistry Department.
Research : photochemistry - photophysics of transition metal complexes, mainly Ru(II) compounds. Their interaction, photophysics and photochemistry with DNA. Ru(II) derivatized oligonucleotides. Synthesis and study of metallic dendrimers and wires of polynuclear complexes. Study by single photon counting and laser flash photolysis. Bio-inorganic functional materials.
Academic qualifications :
Ph.D. degree in Sciences (Chemistry) at the Free University of Brussels in 1972. Photochemistry.
Post-doctoral positions :
- 1972-1974 : Max-Planck-Institut für Strahlenchemie, Mülheim-Ruhr,
Germany. Max Planck Gesellshaft Fellowship.
- 1974-1975 : University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, U.S.A., U.S. Army research grant.
Career at the FNRS (Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique, Directeur de recherche) at the Free University of Brussels (ULB). Sabbatical leave:1988-1989: Columbia University, Chemistry Department, New York, USA. Visiting Professor at the University J. Fourier, in Grenoble, France (twice 5 months in 1997 and 1998).
From October 2000, "Full Professor" at the ULB.

Prize J. Stas - W. Spring of the Royal Academy of Belgium (1972),
Winner of the Annual Competition in Sciences of the Royal Academy of Belgium (1985)
Scientific activity:
Author of more than 160 publications in international journals, 80 invited lectures in Universities, research centers, and congresses, more than 250 communications at international meetings, direction of 35 PhD theses and 25 post-doctoral projects.
