TITLE: School and Institutional Plumber

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent preferred

Comprehensive knowledge of the plumbing trade including:

  • Standard practices of the plumbing trade.
  • Methods, materials and equipment used in plumbing installation, alteration and repair work.
  • Plumbing ordinances and regulations contained in applicable building codes.
  • Hand and machine tools used in the plumbing trade.
  • Appropriate safety procedures and lifting techniques.
  • Technical aspects of field of specialty.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Health and safety regulations and procedures.
  • Maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
  • All types of plumbing materials and equipment in common use in schools

Ability to perform journey-level plumbing work in the repair, installation and maintenance of institutional plumbing pipes, fittings and fixtures of heating, water and drainage systems and gas lines.

Ability towork with minimum supervision

Possess a proven comprehensive work record in plumbing trade.

Licenses and other requirements:

  • Backflow Prevention Certification
  • Valid South Carolina Class Driver’s License

Ability to perform work from ladders.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Energy Management

SUPERVISES:None

JOB GOAL: To work with other Building and Grounds Department personnel in making necessary repairs and maintenance to districtplumbing systems. To develop and implement a preventative maintenanceprogram for all district plumbingsystems, providing a safe and comfortable learning environment for students.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Installs, maintains and repairs potable water systems; installs faucets, flush-o-meters, drinking fountains, pipes, valves, pumps and mixing valves.
  2. Installs, maintains and repairs water waste systems; installs toilets, strainers, traps, cleanouts, interceptors, indirect and direct wastes and pipe; troubleshoots and performs repairs to sewer lines including clearing debris and replacing missing or damaged covers and valve boxes.
  3. Installs, maintains and repairs natural gas systems; installs valves, pipes,sciencelaboratory gas turrets, flex lines, stoves and ovens; inspects and repairs worn out or loose fixtures and potential gas leaks.
  4. Installs, maintains and repairs hot water supply systems; installs a variety of fixtures used to provide hot potable water including water heaters, boilers, pumps, pipes, valves, clocks and relays; inspects and repairs leaks, obstructions and general system failures.
  5. Repairs and maintainscheck valves on fire sprinkler systems; performs routine inspections as required by the local fire department.
  6. Performs a variety of technical work pertaining to the installation of irrigation systems; assists the irrigation technicians with questions regarding proper tie-ins to the potable water supply systems; assists with troubleshooting problems of these systems and repairs as needed.
  7. Installs, maintains and repairs storm drain systems; installs pipes, fittings, basins, and covers; inspect for debris blocking the normal flow path into the system; tests trouble areas to assure proper drainage during the winter months; clears blockages in the drain lines and replaces damaged components.
  8. Provides technical assistance to outside contractors; provides contractors with specifications, plans and site locations related to specific projects.
  9. Assists other maintenance personnel performing unskilled and semi-skilled duties in other maintenance tasks; provides technical information as required.
  10. Communicates with other departments and staff regarding plumbing activities and problems; confers with outside agencies concerning certifying of equipment or devices and concerns related to the water supply; responds to systems related emergency calls as necessary.
  11. Operates and maintains a variety of specialized power and hand tools, heavy equipment and plumbing equipment; drives a vehicle to conduct work.
  12. Maintains a variety of records and prepares reports related to assigned activities.
  13. Plans and lays out plumbing work.
  14. Inspects plumbing systems for maintenance and repair needs.
  15. Estimates materials and supply needs.
  16. Maintains routine records.
  17. Observes health and safety regulations and procedures.
  18. Works from sketches, diagrams, blueprints, plans and specifications.
  19. Communicates effectively both orally and in writing.
  20. Works cooperatively with others.
  21. Performsphysical labor which requires heavy lifting. (Up to 50 pounds alone)
  22. Works from platform or scaffold when required.
  23. Practices safety and good housekeeping in all work.
  24. Through Work Order Management computer software, accesses and processes assigned work order requests to completion.
  25. Processes purchase orders in a timely manner.
  26. Remains available for emergency or unplanned events that may transpire during the course of a year.
  27. Promotes good public relations through professional and ethical execution of job responsibilities.
  28. Participates in staff development programs.
  29. Performs other duties as directed.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:240days. Salary to be determined by the salary schedule established by the Board.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy.
