Anatomy & Physiology Peer Reviewed Articles Lesson

1)Define Peer-reviewed. Relate to taking a used car to a reputable mechanic before purchasing or getting a second opinion for a health diagnosis. Types of scholarly articles we will cover:

  1. Review of the literature/compilation of existing data and findings
  2. Write up on original research

2)Play video from this website the number of libraries on the UW campus (module 2) and then play part of module 1video demonstrating the importance of using sources beyond Google.

3)Compare/Contrast: Hand out one popular press article and another peer-reviewed, scholarly article (just first 5 pages of article and then bibliography and conclusion). on the same or a similar topic. Instruct students to skim or quickly read the easy article first to get an idea of what it is about. Then ask them to glance over the second (scholarly) article enough to know what it is about and how it is written.

  1. Ask students to say what the first article is about and a few things about the language, tone, length of the article.
  2. Ask students to say what the second article is about and a few things about the language, tone, length, authorship, citations.
  3. Fill out the comparison table together so that everyone sees the difference between the two types of articles.

4)Where would your find –

  1. Popular articles on a science topic? Can show samples of popular press articles in magazines & newspapers.
  2. Magazines
  3. Newspapers
  4. Online – the obvious one (Google)
  5. TV
  6. Radio
  7. Scholarly, peer-reviewed articles? Show the Teacher Project link website and briefly go into the three places.
  8. EBSCO – uncheck default “Masterfile Premiere” and check only Medline and ScienceResearchCenter.
  9. PLOS
  10. PUBMED – hard to really know how to use, but can try the simple search. Need to know how to access the free, full-text articles.

5)Specific search skills [identifying key concepts, combining key concepts and refining your search] in Module 3 of the Clue program

6)Complete assignment sheet. It asks students to find one popular press article and one Peer reviewed, scientific article on H1N1 (one aspect of it such as the vaccine), to site these and to compare and contrast these on two main concepts. Students should print out only 5 pages of either article (they can print out less, but not more).
