  1. INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS
  1. FRIENDS OF THEANAHEIM PUBLICLIBRARY REPORT: Helen reported that the Friends are planning another mini sale sometime in the fall. They recently received a large donation of books on behalf of the estate of Mary Raffle, former President of the Friends of the Anaheim Public Library.
  1. FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY REPORT: Bruce shared the that Friends of the Canyon Hills Library (FOCL) member Larry Rushing received the Anaheim Hills citizen of the year award. FOCL will hold a mini book sale during the Teddy Bear Picnic Program at the Canyon Hills Library on Saturday, July 14, 2012. Bruce invited the Board to attend the FOCAL meeting on Thursday, July 19.
  1. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: Audrey reported that the Foundation has requested a wish list from the Library. The Foundation has recently approved purchases for an area rug for the children’s area of the Sunkist Library, books for the children’s and teen collections at the Euclid Library, and stacking chairs for the Canyon Hills Library. A Foundation sponsored author program will be held on September 15, 2012 at the Canyon Hills Library and will feature Authors Sue Jaffarian and Darrell James.
  1. UNSCHEDULED ORAL COMMUNICATION: Bob Wingenroth, City Manager thanked the Library Board for what they do for the City of Anaheim and spoke on the importance of libraries in the community.
  1. WRITTEN COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: None.
  1. FOUNDERS’ PARK TOUR: Jane Newell conducted a tour of Founders’ Park for the Library Board.

  1. NEW BUSINESS:
  1. AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE RECAP: Audrey shared that the American Library Association Annual (ALA) Conference was a huge success. Preliminary estimates are that 15,000-22,000 librarians from all across the world attended. The Muzeo hosted the International Librarians Reception sponsored by the International Relations Round Table on June 25. Over 500 librarians from more than 80 countries attended. Audrey thanked the Anaheim ALA Task Force for helping to coordinate the event. Joanne Hardy volunteered to coordinate the volunteers for the event securing 120 volunteers for the Anaheim ALA Conference at no charge. Audrey sharedmarketingstrategies and innovative ideas that she learned from the workshops she attended at the ALA Conference.
  1. INFORMATION

A.ACTING CITY LIBRARIAN’S REPORT:

  • Audrey announced that Guadalupe Gomez has been reinstated to the Library Services Manager position as a result of the resignation of Marianne Hugo. Guadalupe will be the Library Services Manager for the Haskett Branch Library and the Ponderosa Joint Use Library. In addition Guadalupe will be taking on some System-wide roles. Luz Cayabyab, who was the Principal Librarian at the Haskett Branch Library, will assume responsibility for Central Public Services.
  • The Ponderosa Joint Use Library Grand Opening will be Saturday, September 29, 2012.
  • A recruitment is in progress for a full-time Supervising Librarian. This position will be responsible for the oversight of the East Region (Canyon and East Anaheim) Libraries.
  • Recruitments are underway for Part-Time Librarian and Part-Time Library Technician.
  • Audrey attended the Ponderosa Park Neighborhood Fun Day and was very happy to meet members of the community.

C.Legislative Update: The Governor signed the budget bill and left $4.7 million in funding for libraries and literacy.

  1. CENTRAL ADULT & YOUTH SERVICES ACTIVITIES & STATISTICS: Included in packet.
  1. OPERATIONS ACTIVITIES: Included in packet.
  1. BRANCH SERVICES: Jane shared a letter from Aditya Aggarwal, a third grade student at Horace Mann School. He received at grant from the National Park Trust. His class of 35 students plus parents visited La Palma Park in June. Jane assisted Parks staff by providing a history of the La Palma Park site, with photographs. Park staff discussed conservation methods and assisted the students with “mulching” several trees in the park.
  1. MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: The Board recognized Joanne Hardy for coordinating the volunteers for the American Library Association Annual Conference on behalf of the Anaheim Public Library.

  1. BOARD ITEMS

CAROLYN BRYANT – Attended the American Library Association Conference. Carolyn shared that she has had residents express their interest in having the Canyon Hills Library reopened on Saturdays.

LINELL MATHISEN, CHAIR – None.

LAURIE CRAWFORD, VICE CHAIR –Volunteered as an usher for the American Library Association Conference Scholarship Bash. Laurie mentioned that her sister-in-law is an author and would be available for programs for the Library.

LANA BARLOW – Enjoys that Anaheim feels like a small community even though it is a big City.

  1. NEXT MEETING: The meeting scheduled for August 13, 2012 will be cancelled.
