Primary Objective:

The appointee shall be directly responsible for his/her professional practice to the Manager, Perioperative Services under the day to day supervision of the Senior Anaesthetic Technician and ultimately responsible to Southern District Health Board.

The appointee will be responsible for the provision of technical and clinical assistance to Anaesthetists at Southland Hospital; including the maintenance of anaesthetic, life support and resuscitation equipment.

Performance Measures

Assist Anaesthetist in Theatre /
  • Assist with the preparation and application of IV solutions, ECG’s, CVP’s arterial monitoring temperature, oxygen and CO monitoring, and for direct placement of IV cannulas, intubation, etc under the Anaesthetists supervision.
  • Ensure operating table and attachments are correctly positioned and patient is correctly positioned on the table.
  • Assist with application of plaster casts and tourniquets when required.
  • Prepare local trays and equipment; and position patients for spinal, epidural and regional anaesthetic procedures.
  • Ensure patients are correctly identified in accordance with check-in procedures and medico legal requirements prior to administration of anaesthesia.

Maintain anaesthetic machinery and equipment to required standards /
  • Check and prepare anaesthetic machines and ancillary equipment, ensuring they are in safe and reliable operational condition; and clean and check anaesthetic machines after use.
  • Ensure all patient monitoring equipment is safe, reliable and in operational condition; assist with moving patients and applying monitors.
  • Clean, disinfect and sterilise all equipment when required.

Stock maintenance and ordering /
  • Ensure anaesthetic areas are fully stocked and cleaned.
  • Active participation in regular equipment and stock inventory and ordering.

Maintain accurate data /
  • Utilise management information technology to develop and maintain accurate information resources and co-operate with the Manager, Information Technology to provide data as requested.

Professional Development and Education /
  • Participate in orientation education and teaching programme with trainee technicians and staff.

Quality Assurance /
  • Work and actively participate in the Southern District Health Board Quality Assurance program, providing a vehicle and focus for continuing quality enhancement and excellence in practice; and undertake quality assurance audits as required by the Manager, Perioperative Services.
  • Communicate accurate information within stated time-frames to appropriate areas.

Maintain good communication and interpersonal relationships /
  • Be directed by and communicate with the Manager, Perioperative Services to ensure effective service delivery.
Demonstrate a pleasant accepting and helpful attitude in his/her interactions with clients and staff.

Perform such other duties as may be reasonably required by the Manager, Perioperative Services /
  • Be directed by and communicate with the Manager, Perioperative Services and Clinical Director to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Demonstrate individual responsibility and maintain accountability for own work practice.
  • Participate on a flexible shift roster and on-call duties.

Occupational Health and Safety /
  • Observe and practice safe work methods using safety equipment where it is provided, and report unsafe working conditions or equipment to the Manager, Perioperative Services.

Personal Qualities, Qualifications and Experience:

Essential / Preferred/Desirable

Education

/
  • Be qualified and registered with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand as an Anaesthetic Technician
  • Hold a current Annual Practicing Certificate.

Experience and Knowledge /
  • Minimum of 2 years relevant work experience.
  • Making decisions.
  • Communicate instructions verbally and in writing.

  • Previous experience in the Health Service.
