Practice Background

The Main surgery for Combe Coastal Practice is in Ilfracombe with two branch surgeries, one in Combe Martin and the other in Woolacombe, covering the majority of the Northern Coast of Devon. It is within easy reach of some of the most beautiful beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton, and a short drive from Exmoor.

In April 2016 we merged the former Warwick and Waterside Practices to form the Combe Coastal Practice. At the same time we also introduced a same day team and this is staffed by two GP’s each day and a nurse prescriber.

We are now a 3 site Practice with a total list size of 18500 patients, 7 full time and 6 part time partners and 1 part time salaried GPs. All sites are training practices. Our nursing team consists of a Nurse Prescriber, Practice Nurses, District Nurses and Midwives based at the surgeries.

The Practice is well established and successful and the largest in North Devon.

We are also a member of the Devon Health Group formed in 2014.

The Team

Team Approach\Organisational Structure

Practising as a team has always been part of our philosophy. We like to focus on improvement and are always reviewing areas where this can be made, from patient access through to buildings and their impact.

Multi-disciplinary teams work together across the three sites and we encourage suggestions from these teams for better working ideas.

Team Members

Our Practice Manager leads an excellent Practice Team encompassing the Management Team of a Finance/HR manager, Patient Services and IT Manager and a Premises and Governance Manager. We also have a Reception Team Leader, IT staff, reception and clerical staff plus our surgery teams at each site.

Our Practice Nursing team is overseen by our two Nurse Team Leaders and 7 Registered Nurses, 4 HCA’s and one phlebotomist. They offer all nursing related services from chronic disease management to dressings to ear syringing and phlebotomy. We also have a Nurse Prescriber working in our same day team.

Teaching, Training and Development

The practice has a history of training – we train GP registrars and year five medical students and are about to start offering placements to student nurses.

We are committed to the development of the practice and our staff. This includes mandatory training and developmental training for all our staff. Staff are encouraged to highlight any training they feel would benefit them in the achievement of their role and the practice funds via a learning agreement any training which is felt will benefit the individual and the practice.

Infrastructure

Premises

The practice operates out of three surgeries, Ilfracombe , Combe Martin to the east and Woolacombe to the west. All three buildings are owned by the practice and we have recently completed some major improvements to the Ilfracombe building via the Primary Care Infrastructure Fund.

Computerisation/Communications

The practice currently uses Systm One as its medical records system. All notes are summarised on receipt, and any further paperwork received is scanned onto the patient’s record.

We attempt to be as paperless as possible via means of tasks, emails and Lexacom digital dictation system.

All users have their own logins onto the practice network where all work is stored (and centrally backed up).

We have an excellent practice intranet where all practice information is held as well as a practice website for our patient population. These are monitored and kept up-to-date by the management team.

Integrated Working

Our Partners and staff work across all our sites.

We also have central administration and secretarial teams who are based at our Ilfracombe Site but who operate on behalf of the practice as a whole.

The Management team are also based out of our Ilfracombe surgery but have links to all sites and often work from the other surgeries.
