An Introduction to Northwest Athletics

for Incoming 9th Graders and Their Parents

Jim Tapley, Athletic Director

May 2010

An Overview of Northwest Athletics: We have an outstanding athletic program which is open to all Northwest students who meet the eligibility requirements. During the school year, Northwest offers 43 teams over three seasons. (Please see the back of this sheet for a list of our teams and the contact information of the coaches.)

Our Student-Athletes: Over 900 students participate in Northwest Athletics during the school year. About 60% of our student-athletes have at least a 3.25 grade point average.

By participating in Northwest Athletics, our students learn important life skills, such as effective leadership, working with other people, and time management.

Our Coaching Staff: We have highly motivated, professional coaches who do an outstanding job of working with young people. Our coaches are incredibly dedicated. They take an active role in the academic progress of all of our students. Students and parents are encouraged to contact the coaches to ask sport specific questions. (Please refer to list on the back of this sheet.)

Start Dates for Sports Seasons:

  • Fall sports begin Saturday August 14, 2010.
  • Winter sports begin Monday November 15, 2010.
  • Spring sports begin Tuesday March 1, 2011.

Required Paperwork: To participate in high school sports, all student-athletes MUST have the following paperwork completed and turned into their coach: a current physical, parent permission/residency, and medical card. These forms can be picked up at the school’s main office or at the Athletic Director’s office. Coaches might require additional paperwork, such as a transportation form or a signed team’s expectations form.

Academic Eligibility: To participate in extra-curricular activities, all students must be academically eligible. The student-athlete must have at least a 2.00 grade point average and no more than one E on his/her report card. Note: All new students are academically eligible to participate during their first marking period in the school. This includes incoming 9th graders and transfers from outside of Montgomery County Public Schools.

Sportsmanship: Northwest has established a tradition of outstanding sportsmanship. We have high standards of appropriate behavior for our players, coaches, and spectators.

Get Involved: We strongly encourage all incoming 9th graders to get involved in extra-curricular activities. We are sure that you will enjoy the fun and the excitement of participating in Northwest Athletics.
