Chief, Medical Service -- VA Palo Alto Health Care System

The VA Palo Alto health care system (VAPAHCS), as part of VA Sierra Pacific network, consists of three inpatient divisions located at Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Livermore, in addition to seven community-based outpatient clinics (CBOC).

With VAPAHCS has 833 operating bands, which include 100 kids care beds located at the Palo Alto division. VAPAHCS provides a full range of patient care services with state-of-the-art technology, as well as education and research. Comprehensive healthcare is provided through primary, tertiary, and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care.

An affiliation with the world renowned Stanford University school of medicine provides a rich academic environment including medical training for physicians in virtually all specialties and subspecialties. Over 1300 University residents, interns, and students are trained each year. As the Chief, Medical Service, the incumbent will maintain a joint appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor of Medicine, University Tenure Line, or Medical Center Line, at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Physicians (M.D.) will be considered for this position only.

The predominant criterion for appointment in the University Tenure Line is a major commitment to research and teaching.

The major criteria for appointment for faculty in the Medical Center Line shall be excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, clinical teaching, scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine, and institutional service appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill.

VAPAHCS maintains one of the top three research programs in the VA supporting both basic and clinical research efforts in a wide range of areas including geriatrics, mental health, Alzheimer's disease, spinal cord regeneration, schizophrenia, rehabilitation and regenerative medicine, HIV research and health services, and health economics.

The Chief, Medical Service provides leadership for the clinical, teaching, and research functions within the medical service at VAPAHCS. Leadership and administrative experience is highly desirable, as the Chief, Medical Service, is responsible for establishing and maintaining high standards of excellence in all sections under medical service. Process improvement experience is also highly desirable, as VAPAHCS looks to continuously innovate processes across the healthcare system.
