An Active Volcano

Erupting Volcano

As part of our Science program, we will begin studying about volcanoes. This is the time for students to begin researching on volcanoes in order to complete the two-part assignment.

Part 1: A Report of Information: The written portion of this project will be discussed

and started during language arts. Students will do the outline and some of the

research at school and continue working on the rest at home. The essay will be

due on Wednesday, June 5. The essay must include a bibliography page with at least one book and Internet source.

Part 2: Building a volcano: Students are asked to build a model volcano. They can

use the step-by-step instruction that I have provided below or they can visit

varies websites and build their own unique volcano. The model volcano will be

due on Wednesday, June 5.

Materials:

·  Large metal baking pan, large shoebox lid, or large cardboard

·  Clean empty soup can and plastic bottle, or 2 plastic bottle

·  Modeling clay

·  Baking soda

·  Vinegar

·  Red or orange food coloring

·  Dishwashing liquid

·  Measuring cup

·  Funnel

·  Water

·  Paint (optional)

1. Start by placing an empty soup can or plastic bottle (have a parent cut the mouth piece off) in the center of the cardboard or shoebox and press the modeling clay around the can to form your volcano mountain. For the best effect, completely conceal the can. Then, you can paint the modeling clay to make it look like a mountain. Lastly, add 1/4 cup baking soda into the can or bottle.

2. Make the activation solution. You will need 1cup water, 3/4 cup vinegar, 1/2 cup dishwashing liquid, 20 drops of red/orange food coloring. Pour the activation solution into a clean bottle.

3. Note: This part of the project will be done at school on Wednesday, June 5. To make the volcano erupt, use the funnel and pour a portion of the activation solution into the can or bottle. When this is added to the baking soda, carbon dioxide gas is formed and the bubbles push the flowing "lava" out the “volcano.” Be prepared for a mess!
