Amy Detillier Trant
I was born on April 7, 1972. I was named, Amy Elisa by my parents, Rg and Georganne Detillier. I joined my older sister Angela Marie to create our middle class family. A few years later my sister, Adriane Michelle and soon after that my brother, Ashley Christopher was born to finish off our family. We were a very close family living in LaPlace, Louisiana.
I attended a Catholic private school, St. Joan of Arc, during my elementary school years. Before entering high school my parents pulled us out of private school due to financial difficulties, and I entered the world of public school. I was very upset about this move, but it has helped me become a better person to understand how life can be so different in the same town. I graduated from St. JohnParishPublic School, East St. John in May 1990.
I began my college education at NichollsStateUniversityin August 1990. I always wanted to attend NichollsState as a little girl, but after many troubles with commuting I transferred to Southeastern Louisiana. I began SELU at the same time as I started my education courses. Choosing education was an easy decision for me. I always wanted to inspire others to be the best that they could be. I wanted to watch my students grow and learn, and become a better person because of their education experiences. SELU has influenced my teaching career beyond words can describe. I graduated from SELU with my bachelor degree in elementary education in May 1995.
I met my husband, Alan Trant, while beginning my college education at NichollsUniversity, and we were married on December 10, 1993. With many difficulties getting pregnant and after many fertility treatments, I finally got pregnant with twins in 1999. My children, boy/girl twins, Andrew David and Ali Denise were born in February 2000. They are now 6 years old and in the 1st grade at St. Amant Primary where I teach.
I student taught at St. Amant Primary, and after graduating with my bachelor’s degree I got hired there and have been teaching at St. Amant for the past 12 years. 11 of those years have been in the Kindergarten classroom. I love being at St. Amant, we have a family type atmosphere and are always looking out for each other. In my early years of teaching computers were not found in the classrooms, I am happy to say that I was one of the first teachers to receive a computer in my classroom. Many teachers were not comfortable with using technology in the classroom. We now have grown with technology throughout our school, and I am happy to say that all of our classrooms now are equipped with computers. We now have a computer lab that all classes utilize.
I have never been afraid of computers, and always strive to find ways to improve my teaching using different technologies this has led me to pursue my master’s degree in Educational Technology. Computers affect everyone’s life everyday – even if you do not own a computer. Some kindergarten students know more about computers that their parents, so I want the students to explore and learn all they can while they have the chance. The world will be so dependent on computers in the future. The students of today must be able to manipulate a computer to be successful in the future. Computers are a part of today’s world, and I want my students to feel comfortable with exploring computers and their functions.
