COPENHAGEN, Denmark

If there's such a thing as a cozy city, Copenhagen is it. It has no glittering skylines, few killer views, and only a handful of meager skyscrapers. Bicycles spin alongside auto traffic, and in the early morning in the pedestrian streets of the city's core the air is redolent of freshly baked bread and soap-scrubbed storefronts. Even at the height of the busy summer there is always a quiet café or lakeside bench where you can ponder this European capital and its provincial soul. Museums, restaurants, and lively nightlife are all part of the city's appeal, but perhaps its greatest resource is its spirited inhabitants. Imaginative and unconventional, affable Copenhageners exude a liberal philosophy that embraces nearly all lifestyles and leanings.

There is an unmistakable joie de vivre in Denmark's friendly capital, Copenhagen, which resonates from lingering in a café on summer's day or marvelling at the sculptures in Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. Kids -- and adults -- of all ages can't resist a spin on the merry-go-round at the amusement park extraordinaire Tivoli. Strolling is a way of life here as reflected by its Strøget, the longest and oldest pedestrians-only shopping street in Europe. Afterward, stop for ice cream at Kongens Nytorv, while admiring the tall rigged ships moored in the canal.

Things to Do

Start with the iconic Little Mermaid statue located in the Copenhagen harbour. The National Museum houses archaeological finds in an 18th-century mansion, while timeless pleasures thrive in Museum Erotica and classical sculptures fill the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. Take a canal tour or see the streets by bike, and learn beer facts at the Carlsberg Museum. See Denmark's much-admired contributions to modernism behind the smoked glass exterior of the Danish Design Centre.

Shopping

Core to the Copenhagen shopping experience is Strøget, packed with fashion, top-notch Georg Jensen jewelry, and china. Browse the local fashion emporiums on Købmagergade or try on second-hand style in Pisserenden. Choose decorative arts and browse for kitsch collectibles on Bredgade, or check out the latest Danish designs on Kronprinsensgade. Come to Grønnegade for hip wear and people watching. On summer weekends, you can find bargains at the antique and flea markets.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Enjoy top music at contemporary Copenhagen Opera House and regular recitals in city-wide churches. Jazz is a huge part of the city's culture, peaking at the annual Jazz Festival. Late-night revellers can join in on the merrymaking in the traditional beer houses and dance clubs in Østerbro. Copenhageners like to go out late so you could be dancing alone if you get to a club before midnight.

Restaurants and Dining

International cuisine joins traditional Danish dishes on the menus of the Michelin-starred restaurants and cafés in Copenhagen. Dine on sushi and traditional herring in fashionable Pilestroede, the heart of Copenhagen's buzzing restaurant quarter, just off the Strøge. After exploring the city, enjoy a herring-filled smørrebrød (long open sandwich) at a café in scenic Gråbrødretorv.

Journeying Back to the 1960s: If you're nostalgic for the counterculture of the 1960s, it lives on in Christiania, a Copenhagen community located at the corner of Prinsessegade and Badsmandsstræde, on Christianshavn. Founded in 1972, this anarchists' commune occupies former army barracks; its current residents preach a gospel of drugs and peace. Christiania's residents have even organized their own government and passed laws, for example, to legalize drugs. They're not complete anarchists, however, as they venture into the city at least once a month to pick up their social welfare checks. Today you can wander about their community, which is complete with a theater, cafes, grocery stores, and even a local radio station.

Relaxing along the canal in Copenhagen, Denmark

MALMO, Sweden

(Site of IIHF U20 Men’s Hockey Championships)

Malmo has the reputation of being Sweden’s most cosmopolitan cities. It is linked to Denmark by the 16km Oresund bridge. With its canals, parks and largely pedestrianised streets, Malmo is a pleasure to explore.

Originally built in 1434, Malmohus castle was the home to the Danish royal mint before being destroyed by a popular uprising in Skane between 1534 and 1536. Extensive renovation has been carried out to repair the damage done by fire in the late 19th century. There are many interesting museums located in and around the castle.

TYRINGE, Sweden

Tyringe is a locality situated in Hässleholm Municipality, Skåne County, Sweden with about 5,000 inhabitants. Administratively, Tyringe was made a municipal community (municipalsamhälle) within the rural municipalities of Finja and Västra Torup in 1928. The municipality was amalgamated with Hässleholm Municipality in 1974. Tyringe was mentioned in writing (with exactly the same spelling as today) in 1530.

By the 17th century, a more organized village center emerged around the village inn. It grew to an urban area after the inception of the railway between Hässleholm and Helsingborg in 1875, and at the turn of the century, it became known as a popular vacation spa town for vacationers arriving to receive mineral cure treatments at the mineral spring. A sanatorium and several hotels and inns were built during this era, including the upscale Tyringe Kurhotell built in 1904. In 1923, various metalworking industries were established in Tyringe, resulting in a population increase.

Tyringe Church was built in 1925. The architecture includes typical Scaniancrow-step gables, and is modeled on Gumlösa Church, which was built in 1191. Since 2006, Tyringe church is no longer open to the public except for mass and various services. Tyringe has two schools, the Tyre School and the Vedhygge School. The Tyre School accommodates pupils from the surrounding villages, including Röke, Finja, Matteröd and other smaller villages.
