AMSCO Chapter 8 Review Questions

As we study the period from 1814-1860 there are two broad themes that I want you to focus on:

  1. Growth/Change: This is an era of tremendous growth in the United States. This growth will be manifested in all areas of American society and bring about rapid change and conflict. Look for examples of this growth as you read Chapter 8.
  2. Nationalism v. Sectionalism: Ironically, this time period will mark a growing national identity, as well as growing sectional discord. How can both happen at the same time? As you read Chapter 8 look for factors that contribute to both nationalism and sectionalism.

Guided Reading Questions:

  1. Why is Monroe’s presidency known as “The Era of Good Feelings”? What is inaccurate about the term? (note: fracturing of the Republican Party pg. 143)
  2. Where does Monroe rank on the C-Span list of American Presidents? Why do you think he gets this ranking? Identify the key political events of his presidency.
  3. What was Henry Clay’s “American System”? How does it promote a new economic nationalism?
  4. How did the Panic of 1819 show the potential dangers of a rapidly expanding national economy?
  5. Note: Rulings of The Marshal Court tended to focus on issues relating to two broad categories: a) the establishment of national authority, and b) the rights of property owners. Add these four rulings to your list of “Need to Know Supreme Court Rulings” and explain how they fit into one or both of the categories above.

  10. Why did Missouri’s petition for statehood spark a sectional crisis?

  12. How will Henry Clay (“The Great Compromiser”) resolve the dispute over Missouri statehood? How long will his compromise last?
  13. How will the Rush-Bagot Treaty and the Treaty of 1818 resolve much of the post War of 1812 tension between Britain and The United States?
  14. What role will Andrew Jackson play in the U.S. acquisition of Florida from Spain in 1819?
  15. What is the Monroe Doctrine? How is it an exertion of growing U.S. authority in world affairs? How was it a “hollow threat” at the time it was issued?
  16. What impact will the Industrial Revolution have on the U.S. economy?
  17. From 1800-1850 roads, canals and steam-boats revolutionized transportation in the U.S. (Note: starting in the 1840’s Railroads will start to supplant these other means of transportation). Identify significant developments in road, canal, and steam-boat development.
  18. Identify the significance of each of the following to the growth of American industry:
  19. Eli Whitney
  20. Samuel Slater
  21. The Lowell System
  22. What factors led to the growth of “King Cotton” in the south?
