Seeking AmeriCorps Community Engagement Specialist 2017/2018

Position Description

Horizon Education Centers will engage 12 AmeriCorps members to serve between September 1, 2016 and August 14, 2017 in Cleveland, Elyria, Lorain, North Olmsted, and Warrensville Heights, Ohio. Members will provide service to engage the community (families, children, volunteers) residing in the economically disadvantaged communities Horizon Education Centers childcare centers are located in. Of the 12 members, 1 will serve HandsOn North East Ohio by mobilizing and coordinating volunteers in the community, 1 member will servethe South Elyria Communityby engaging 5th to 8th graders in programming, career and college readiness;Remaining 9 members will serve at Horizon locations in the communities listed above by engaging the community in education.

AmeriCorps engages more than 75,000 Americans in intensive service each year across the country. AmeriCorps members give a year (or more) of their life in service to others to help communities address pressing social needs.

The mission of Horizon Education Centers is to provide affordable quality care including educational and enrichment opportunities to the children in our communities. Horizon performs two operations: early childhood education and supplementary education.

Program-specific duties

·  Provide ideas for, plan and lead specific project assigned to (family engagement/student support, volunteer coordination, or kindergarten readiness).

·  Become familiar with community in order to individualize services.

·  Maintain documentation for services provided.

·  Establish and maintain communication with targeted population (families, students, and/or volunteers).

·  Support program staff, your supervisor, and administrative staff in duties as appropriate and necessary.

·  Consult with your supervisor if you have any ideas, issues, or concerns, offering analysis and solutions whenever possible.

·  Respect confidentiality of students, family members, staff, and AmeriCorps members.

Citizenship training and responsibilities

·  Participate in AmeriCorps training and events as required and requested by the Ohio Service Commission.

·  Participate in and complete AmeriCorps Justice Talking Training.

·  Participate in community service activities.

Program training

·  Participate in orientation training.

·  Participate in carrying out Professional Development plan

·  Meet regularly with Program Director and other members for training and team building.

Program leadership

·  Make connections with individuals and volunteers in the community for program outreach and program enhancement.

·  Assist AmeriCorps members and staff in programming and activities

·  Train and assist volunteers.

Service schedule: AmeriCorps Community Engagement Specialists are expected to serve 1700 hours between 9/5/17 and 8/10/18. Hours will vary but typical schedule will be 10am-6pm, Monday-Friday.

Qualifications/Skill Requirements

·  High School Diploma or GED

·  Some college, in education, social work, sociology, family and community studies, political science, preferred

·  U.S. citizen, natural, or lawful permanent resident age 18 or older

Program benefits: AmeriCorps members will be provided:

·  Living allowance of $12,630

·  Health care benefits

·  Child care benefits, as eligible

·  Segal Education Award upon successful completion of service (current amount $5,775)
