2013 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION & INFORMATION

FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

The APWA Southern California Chapter will be awarding $500 scholarships to a limited number of graduating High School Seniors and are selected after meeting the eligibility standards and qualifying criteria outlined below.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

The applicant must be a graduating Senior who plans to pursue a career in the Public Works field by enrolling in a community college, trade school or four year college or university. A list of the college majors that qualify for a career in the Public Works field is attached.

QUALIFYING CRITERIA

1. Applicant must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better.

2. Applicant must enroll as a full-time student (a minimum of 12 units per semester) in a

Community college, trade school, four-year college or university during the 2013 Fall Semester

or Quarter.

3. Applicant must submit, with their completed Scholarship Competition Information Form, a 200- 400 word essay explaining a) the effect a college education will have on their future, b) the major they plan to complete, c) the Public Works career they plan to pursue, and d) their career goals.

4. Applicant must submit, with their completed Scholarship Competition Information Form, two letters of recommendation. One letter must come from a faculty member of their High School. Recommendations from family members are not acceptable.

5. A Review Committee may interview qualifying applicants at their High School or over the phone during April/May 2013. Final selection of the scholarship winners will be made prior to May 31, 2013.

6. Those applicants awarded scholarships must agree to assist, for four hours, with the Public Works Career Guidance program during the 2013/2014 school year. This assistance will usually be at their High School or, if they are attending a school outside of Southern California, at a High School in that area.

7. Those applicants awarded scholarships will be eligible to compete for an additional scholarship in subsequent years while they pursue their undergraduate degree.

Four Hour Commitment

Our 4 hour service requirement asks each scholarship recipient to share his or her college experiences with high school students. Each recipient must share the efforts and sacrifices that he or she has made in pursuing his or her education and ultimately being awarded a degree from a Trade School, Community and four year college or university.

The recipient should also inform these young people that he or she has received an APWA So. Cal. Chapter scholarship and that these scholarships areavailable to High School seniors and undergraduate students, residing in the Los Angeles/Orange County area,who pursue aPublic Works relateddegree at Trade Schools, Community and four year colleges or universities. This obligation can be fulfilled in your home town or in the area of the undergraduate school that you are attending. You can talk at your High School, college or to community or church sponsored youth groups. If you are having trouble finding a group to talk to, ask one of your former High School teachers orcurrent college professors to help you.
