American Chemical Society

March 17, 2004

Dear Wabash Valley Chemistry Educator,

The Wabash Valley Section of the American Chemical Society is supporting the Chemistry Olympiad. The testing is done on three levels. The first is at the local level and will take place on Friday, April 2, 2004. We are inviting 3 students from each high school in the section to come and take the test. The eight students who score the best on the local test will be allowed to take the National Chemistry Olympiad test on April 16. Only two students from a high school can take the national exam. The top 20 students from this national testing will then be asked to spend a portion of the summer at a training camp and the best will go on to international competition. We would like each school to be represented in the local competition.

The test that will be given to the students will be the Chemistry Olympiad Local Section Exam and is meant to select the best students for international competition. Your students will benefit from the experience.

All regularly enrolled high school students who graduate no earlier than the spring of 2004 are eligible to compete. The student's date of birth must be after July 31, 1984. To be eligible to the take the national test, the students must either hold or be eligible to hold a U.S. Passport.

Since our Section is so spread out, we are going to administer the test at two sites: Vincennes University and Rose-Hulman.

Vincennes Rose-Hulman

If your school is closer to Vincennes, contact Jay Bardole at 812-888-4372. If your school is closer to Terre Haute, contact Ed Mottel at 812-877-8315. Please contact the individual at the school at which you wish to compete by Wednesday, March 31.

We would also like you to be our guest at the Wabash Valley Section of the American Chemical Society Education Night meeting on the Rose-Hulman Campus on Wednesday April 14, 2004. Each high school chemistry teacher that attends the dinner can also bring along one of their students as our dinner guest! It's a wonderful opportunity to introduce a high school student to chemistry. The speaker will be Dr. John Fortman and the topic is 'The Chemistry of Flighf'. If you plan to come, please respond to Ed Mottel by Monday, April 12 (sooner is better).

Lastly, this announcement is going out by both U.S. Mail and e-mail. Electronic mail is faster! If you have an e-mail address, please respond to edward.a.moffel @ rose-hulman.edu. If you have received this announcement by e-mail, I already have your e-mail address. If there is an additional chemistry teacher at your school and he/ she did not get this announcement, please encourage them to take part in these local American Chemical Society activities.

Sincerely,

Ed Moftel
