A STUDY TO FIND THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SOCIAL SKILLS TRAINING FOR BOYS OF A SELECTED ORPHANAGE AT MANGALORE.
Brief resume of the intended work
6.1 Need for the study
As per the latest survey, the number of under 14 year children in India is about 3,40,11,900. Out of which 6.8%, i.e. 23,34,600 are orphans.Most of the orphan children are lost their one or both the
parents1-3
Orphans are usually deprived of food, shelter, education and parental love and affection. Parental separation and societal discrimination leads to lack of social skills among orphan children, like communication skills, group skills including leadership development etc.4Though the orphanage provides food and shelter, but it is only till the child reaches adulthood. Later child has to live in the society.
Children and young people housed in such residential care centers are emotionally disturbed; they are prone to violent behavior and may have been involved in crimes as reviewed in a study among 1000 rescued children at the government home. They often fare poorly in school, shout or physically fight to handle social conflicts and are very likely to engage in risky behaviors which shows lack of social skills.4Furthermore, they struggle to make successful transitions to the community. Studies have also suggested that social skills training program help the orphan children to gain social skills4-8
The above mentioned findings, extensive review of literature and investigators personal experience, foresaw the need for conducting the study to assess the effect of social skill training among orphan children which highlights its usefulness in having a good and adjusted life.
6.2. Review of literature
Life skills building in 1000 randomly selected orphan and children through arts, over three months in Tamilnadu. They were surveyed by using simple random sampling. It assessed life skills training for three months by drama,music,dance, & has found to improve cognitive, social skills and personal competancies.. The result revealed that a surge of change 73.3%, art helped to overcome depression in 50% and improve in life skills through arts in 75% of the children.4
Social skills training program of age 10-14 years with behavior problem was conducted by Psychiatric hospital,Bahrain.Eight sample received by 11 sessions related to classroom behavior, effective communication ,problem solving and coping with stress was an important support for the healthy development of the children. The result revealed that there is a improvement in behavior pattern (17.56 to 44.69%).over all program recommended that social skills training is an important support in the healthy psychological development of the children.5
Social skills training program for 71 school age children(6-13) conducted by Department of Psychiatry and Psychology,Myo-clinic,Rochester, for which include the meeting of friends, joining in groups, anger management and avoiding fights of a duration of 8 weeks .Result showed the reduction in externalizing behavior(93%) and increase ability to play with others(64%) which increased with training.6
Social skills training program conducted by department of Psychiatry, Taipei Medical University-Wan fang hospital, Taiwan among 8 attention deficit hyperactive children (4-6 years) who have difficulties in regulating their emotions and maintaining good peer relations, for a duration of eight weeks .Result showed positive effect (71%)on the behavior of pre-school children with attention deficit hyperactive disorder.7
A meta-analysis of 55 single-subject design, studies the effective of school-based social skills interventions for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder, maintenance, and generalization effects were measured by computing the percentage of non-overlapping data points. The results suggests that social skills interventions have been minimally effective(43%) for children with autism spectrum disorders.8
6.3Statement of the problem
A study to find the effectiveness of social skills training for boys of a selected orphanage at Mangalore.
6.4.Objectives of the study
  1. To assess the level of social skills in boys at orphanage by a social skills checklist.
  2. To evaluate the effect of social skills training in the boys at the orphanage.
  3. To find an association between the level of social skills and selected variables.
6.5Operational Definitions
Social skills training: -It refers to the communication and group training skills, which would help the children in taking up an independent decision and living in the society during their adulthood. It is a package of activities delivered to the children of orphanage through role play, drama, and educational programmes with relevance to the required daily activities.
Communication skills It refers to the verbal and nonverbal responses, used by the children in relevance to time and situation, while conversing with others, with due consideration to etiquette and manners
Group living skills: In this study It refers values and adjustment required for a group living in the society after they quit from orphanage and are ready to face independent life.
Boys:-In this study it refers to the male children living in orphanage of age between 8-12 years.
6.6 Assumptions
This study assumes that:
  • Every person has some social skill.
  • Social skills can influence by environment, self thoughts and training.
  • Delimitations:
  • Thesocial skills will be assessed only through investigator prepared social skills checklist.
  • Assessment of social skills will be limited only to the boys from selected orphanage in Mangalore.
  • The social skills assessed are restricted only to groupliving and communication skills.
  • Hypotheses:(Tested at 0.05 level of significance)
H1: There will be a significant difference between the pre test and post test level of social skills in boys living at the orphanage.
H2: There will be a significant association between the social skills and selected variables.
Material and methods:
7.1Source of data
  • Boys from a selected orphanage.
7.1.1 Research design
  • Pre experimental one group pretest - post test design.
  • Setting
The setting selected for the study is Aloysian boys home at Mangalore which resides 104 children. It is executed by the St Aloysius college and is managed by the Sisters of charity belonging to Religious congregation. It is situated in the Kotekar, Mangalore.
7.1.3 Population
  • Boys between 8-12 years, living in the orphanage.
  • Methods of data collection
  • Sampling procedure:
  • Convenient sampling.
  • Sample size:
  • 60 Boys of Orphanage.
7.2.3Inclusion Criteria for sampling :
  • Boys living in the orphanage.
  • Boys between 8-12 years.
  • Boys willing to participate
  • Exclusion Criteria for sampling:
  • Boys who are not mentally stable.

  • 7.2.6 Data collection method:
Permission will be obtained from the Institutional head. Consent will be obtained by the samples. Pretest will be conducted by administering social skills checklist to the selected Boys in orphanage. The activities and events planned for social skills formation like role play, drama and education classes will be implemented over 15days (social skills training program). The training evaluation will be done after 15days with the same social skills checklist.
7.2.7Data analysis plan
  • Baseline variables will be analyzed by using frequency and percentage.
  • Effect of teaching programme on social skill will be analyzed by using paired’ t’test
  • Association will be measured by using Chi-square test..
7.3Does the study require any investigations or interventions to be conducted on patients or other humans or animals? If so, please describe briefly.
Yes, The investigator will analyze the social skills by the social skills checklist .The consent of the orphanage administrator will be obtained by the investigator. The validated training program will be given to the children. Later the post test will be conducted by using the same checklist.
