Dragons Love Tacos in a Matinee Performance
HANOVER, NH—Five favorite contemporary children’s books leap off the shelf and onto the stage in Dragons Love Tacos, a brand-new musical revue by Theatreworks USA, America’s leading touring theater for young people. The show takes place Sunday, September 23, at 3 pm in Spaulding Auditorium of the Hopkins Center for the Arts. Recommended for grades K-5, the show is about one hour in length.
The five picture books are:
Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin: Dragons love all sorts of tacos—except spicy ones. When a boy throws his new dragon friends a spicy salsa taco party, red-hot trouble ensues. A New York Times bestselling phenomenon.
Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein: It’s bedtime for the little red chicken. Papa is going to read her a story, but the chicken can’t help interrupting. Will the chicken ever get to sleep?
The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds: A story about the creative spirit in all of us. Vashti can’t draw, but when her teacher says “Just make a mark and see where it takes you,” Vashti discovers she is an artist, after all.
Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride by Kate DiCamillo, Illustrated by Chris Van Dusen: Mercy, a porcine wonder, and Mr. Watson go for a ride every Saturday in Mr. Watson’s automobile. But one Saturday, guess who winds up behind the wheel?
Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa School Days by Erica Silverman, painted by Betsy Lewin: Cowgirl Kate and her loyal horse Cocoa are the perfect pair. They do everything together, until school is in session—and horses are not allowed.
Writer/director/actor Marcus Stevens(Yo, Vikings!)worked with Theatreworksto create theshow, writing material with composers Joe Kinosian and Brian Lowdermilk, and then directing a two-week workshop with the cast. Dragons Love Tacosis being given a full-scale New York tour before heading out on the road for the 2017-2018 season.

Theatreworks USA
A touring theater for young people and their families, Theatreworks performs 16 plays a year in all 50 states. In New York, the group performs at Town Hall in midtown Manhattan. The mission of Theatreworks USA is to create, produce, and provide access to professional theatre for young people and family audiences nationwide, including disadvantaged youth and under-served communities. Since its founding in 1961, Theatreworks has presented more than 90 million children and their families with opportunities to enjoy its theatrical productions throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Each season, three million children, many of whom have no other access to the performing arts, attend Theatreworks original productions in venues as varied as local elementary school gymnasiums, regional fine arts centers, and major Broadway-sized theatres. Theatreworks USA tours approximately 16 shows each season from its repertoire of 133 plays and musicals.
Theatreworks USA has been the recipient of awards and nominations including the Drama Desk Award Nominee for Outstanding Lyrics and the Lucille Lortel Award Nominee for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Choreography, both for Click, Clack, Moo in 2010. In 2008, Theatreworks was a Lucille Lortel Award Nominee for Outstanding Revival, Outstanding Choreography and Outstanding Costumes, and a Drama League Award Nominee for Outstanding Revival of a Musical—both for Seussical. In 2005 its production of Junie B. Jones was a Lucille Lortel Award Nominee for Best Musical and Best Choreography.
In 2001, Theatreworks USA received the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation Award for "artistic vision and commitment to the support and development of theatre artists." Theatreworks also received the Drama Desk Award given by New York theatre critics in 1996 for Theatreworks' "35 years of providing quality entertainment to children and their parents."
The Hopkins Center
Founded in 1962, the Hopkins Center for the Arts is a multi-disciplinary academic, visual and performing arts center dedicated to uncovering insights, igniting passions, and nurturing talents to help Dartmouth and the surrounding Upper Valley community engage imaginatively and contribute creatively to our world. Each year the Hop presents more than 300 live events and films by visiting artists as well as Dartmouth students and the Dartmouth community, and reaches more than 22,000 Upper Valley residents and students with outreach and arts education programs.
