  • As a resident of San Diego, I understand the importance of the Hotel del Coronado to the entire region. Recent improvements to the property include the new entry garden at RH Dana and Orange Avenue, widened sidewalks, and the Paseo del Mar beachfront walkway; these benefit not only guests of the hotel, but the Coronado business community, residents, and visitors.
  • Local businesses rely heavily upon the Hotel del to generate traffic to their coastal visitor-serving retail and restaurant establishments. The build-out of the Master Plan, with 144 additional hotel guestrooms and a new conference center is necessary for the hotel to remain competitive into the future.
  • The Amended Master Plan continues the beautification already begun, and includes improving access to and around the hotel with widened landscaped sidewalks, and a new signalized intersection at Avenida del Sol. This new intersection will improve traffic safety and also provide for a safe way for pedestrians to cross Orange Avenue and access the beach.
  • Completed by the hotel in 2008, the entry garden at Orange Avenue and RH Dana Place is a significant improvement that has reconnected the Coronado Village with the Hotel del Coronado. This entry provides the first view the hotel, as well as pedestrian access directly through the hotel property to the beach.
  • With the Amended Master Plan, the Paseo beachfront walkway will be relocated to improve beach access and route pedestrians safely around, instead of through, the Avenida del Sol cul-de-sac. The Paseo will be connected to the boardwalk in front of the Coronado Shores, making a wonderful recreational amenity for the public.
  • The Amended Master Plan also provides for the restoration of the hotel’s historic front porch, which has been covered over for decades.
  • With the Master Plan improvements, the majority of parking will be underground, eliminating much of the unsightly surface parking that exists today and adding new garden areas. The new guestrooms and conference center, with architecture complementary to the Victorian style of the historic hotel, will be harmonious additions.
  • I respectfully request that the Coastal Commission vote to approve the Hotel del Amended Master Plan.
