Innovations in sharpening and turning of the smallest workpiece diameters

At AMB 2018 Leistritz Produktionstechnik GmbH will be presenting a number of innovative tools that enable machining of the smallest workpiece diameters.

Pleystein (June 06, 2018) – Machining small and very small workpieces quickly reaches its limits with classic end finishing tools. Especially when different holders or cutting edges are to be adjusted to the smallest diameters for individual machining operations, it is usually not possible due to collision of the respective holders. Another challenge is changing the cutting edges and resetting the tool.

Top-Turn

"In order to offer a convenient solution that is reliable in operation, we have developed the multi-edged sharpening tool Top-Turn for defined sharpening and chamfering workpieces with a diameter of 1.0 mm or more," reports Bernhard Vater proudly, Head of Construction and Application Technology at Leistritz. "The tubular chamfer range, which has been tried and tested for years, has been supplemented by a further solid carbide insert. A precise insert seat in the basic holder in conjunction with the circumferentially ground form insert ensure a high degree of repeat accuracy when changing inserts."

The two-piece tool consists of a basic holder, which can be manufactured with custom shank designs, and an exchangeable form insert with up to four cutting edges. The unused cutting edges are safely protected with a comprehensive insert seat. The solution for producing defined chamfering and sharpening of the smallest of diameters lies in the special design of the cutting edge geometry of the form inserts. This means that even delicate contours can be produced burr-free and in a defined manner on the workpiece.

Over-Cut

A further innovation at the AMB Exhibition is the Over-Cut tool system, which can be used for axial turning of elongated components with a workpiece diameter of 3.0 mm or more. Here, too, the innovation lies in the very simple machining of small workpieces. The patent-pending, two-part tool consists of a basic holder with a head diameter of 32 mm, which can be manufactured with custom shaft designs and an exchangeable round solid carbide insert. The insert is ground in the bore and on the cutting edges for the respective machining diameter and clamped in the basic holder by means of three screws. A safety pin is used to prevent rotation. Three screws arranged at an angle of 120° allow fine adjustment of the concentricity. Several chip chamber openings on the tool head aid in chip removal. The internal coolant supply through the shank flushes out the chips.
