Amal Shevah Mofet and the Global Impact Apprentice Challenge

Amal Shevah Mofet, located in Tel Aviv, participatedin the2010-2011 school yearin GIA – Global Impact Apprentice Challenge, founded by the Empower Peace organization.
Our highest group of English class (5 points taught by Dr. Daniela Feldman, our English coordinator),was paired with South Royalton, a school from Vermont. Together, via technology and regular video conferences, we learned more about each other’s water related issues. We decided that our team’s name would be ‘H2O & You’.
We focused on the water pollution of the Yarkon River. We met up with experts and dug even deeper into the subject of water pollution and how we can really help to reverse the river’s situation.

During the GIA project, we’ve all learned and realized how critical it is to take care of our environment, whether the issue is water pollution, air pollution or excess trash, because after all this is our home and the planet’s fate is in our hands.

Shortly after the end of the third and final video conference, it was announced that the Israeli group had won a prize for best technical production and visuals. Also, it was decided that a number of pupils from each country would visit the USA. From Israel , Dr. Daniela Feldman and two of her students (Djamila Nuriev and Yulia Varshavsky), gotten the chance to visit the USA:

“We were in the US for 3 weeks, a week in Boston, Massachusetts where we stayed at Wheelock College and went on a couple of cruises, visited many museums, fascinating presentations, aquariums and even Harvard University! The second week was spent in Vermont, inour teammates’ hometown. There we explored their river’s situation, learned about living organisms in the river, visited Vermont’s law school where we heard a very inspiring speech and basically visited Vermont all around (especially the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory!). Finally, the last week was spent in Erie, Pennsylvania, where we sawinteresting presentations, museums and at the end of the week ,we even got to not only visit the Niagara falls but to also be there up close and touch it!

Overall, the whole experience was amazing, we all got to learn so much. The trip to the USA was very fascinating, we met people of different cultures (Egyptians and Jordanians), and realized that people are still people no matter where they’re from, they all have their environmental/publicconcerns. We are all one big family! But most importantly we’ve learned that we all have to work together in order to make the world a better place.”
