a.  Student of the Month:

Norte Vista High School is proud to recognize Danielle Samra as the Alvord Unified School District Student of the Month for May 2004.

Danielle is a senior and has been an active member of the Norte Vista family for the past four years. Danielle was a cheerleader for three years, played soccer for two years and has been an ASB officer for all four years. This year Danielle is the Senior Class President and has led the class of 2004 during some of our greatest community events such as the Thanksgiving drive, the toy drive and the Red Cross collection for the California wildfires. Danielle has also planned and organized a series of successful senior activities such as a luau, an assembly, the senior class panoramic picture and Disney road show. Danielle has been accepted at California Baptist University where she will pursue her higher education beginning in the fall.

It is a great pleasure to honor Danielle Samra as the Alvord Unified School District Student of the Month for May 2004.

b. Volunteer of the Month:

Norte Vista High School is honored to recognize Maria Camarena as the Alvord Unified School District Volunteer of the Month for May 2004.

Mrs. Camarena has been in the United States for 25 years. She started working as a volunteer in 1989 at La Granada Elementary School. She later moved up to Wells Middle School and then came to Norte Vista High School in 2000. She has been working with the Padres Unidos at Norte Vista for the past four years including a year as secretary. She has also been involved in ELAC and was the DLEC president for the District. In 2003 Mr. and Mrs. Camarena were recognizedby the City of Riverside as volunteers for the community.

Norte Vista High School is proud to recognize Maria Camarena as the Alvord Unified School District Volunteer of the Month for May 2004.

a. Approve Minutes: Board approval is requested for the Minutes of the Special Meeting & Board Workshop of April 15, 2004.

b. Accept Gifts:

1) Terrace PTA made donations totaling $17,698.00 to pay for a new electronic marquee at Terrace Elementary School.

2) Wal-Mart donated $500.00 to Norte Vista High School to purchase equipment for the Agriculture Department.

c. Adopt Resolution No. 43 – Day of the Teacher: Wednesday, May 12, 2004, has been designated as “California Day of the Teacher” by the Legislature of the State of California. This resolution is presented in recognition of Alvord teachers.

d. Adopt Resolution No. 44 – Classified School Employee Week: The week of May 16-22, 2004, has been designated as “Classified School Employee Week” in California by the California School Employees Association and the California State Board of Education. This resolution is presented in recognition of Alvord classified employees.

g. Approve Agreement – High Desert & Inland Employee/Employer Trust: Board approval is requested for an agreement with High Desert & Inland Employee/Employer Trust to administer the Classified Benefits Program.

h. Adopt Resolution No. 42 – Authorized Signatories – State School Facilities Program Project Documentation: Board approval is requested for adoption of Resolution No. 42 to authorize signatories for State School Facilities Program Project Documentation.

Award Contract to Oseland Construction – Remove and Replace Asphalt/Concrete – Orrenmaa Elementary School and Arizona Middle School: Board approval is requested to award a contract for the removal and replacement of asphalt/concrete at Orrenmaa Elementary School and Arizona Middle School to Oseland Construction as the lowest responsible bidder meeting all contract requirements.

Fiscal Impact: $49,000.00 (Deferred Maintenance Fund)

j. Approve Contract with Richard Roberts for Department of the State Architect (DSA) Inspection Services – La Sierra High School: Board approval is requested for a contract with Richard Roberts for DSA inspection services related to installation of ten State Emergency portable classrooms at La Sierra High School.

Fiscal Impact: $5,000.00 (50/50 State/Local Funds)

k. Approve Agreement for Professional Services – Clover Enterprises, Inc.: Board approval is requested for an agreement with Clover Enterprises, Inc. for professional services to provide athletic training at La Sierra and Norte Vista High Schools effective August 20, 2004, through June 20, 2005.

l. Approve Change Order – Loma Vista Middle School Modernization Project: Board approval is requested for a change order related to the Loma Vista Middle School Modernization Project.

m. Approve Change Order – La Sierra High School Kitchen Project: Board approval is requested for a change order related to the La Sierra High School Kitchen Project.

n. Approve Change Order – Norte Vista High School Kitchen Project: Board approval is requested for a change order related to the Norte Vista High School Kitchen Project.

Instructional Support Services Items

o. Approve Agreement for Consultant Services – La Sierra University: Board approval is requested for consultant services between La Sierra University and Alvord Unified School District to provide reading tutoring for our After School Programs from July 1, 2003 through June 30, 2004.

p. Approve Riverside County Superintendent of Schools Contract No. C-5368: Board approval is requested for an agreement with Riverside County Superintendent of Schools to provide Riverside County Achievement Team (RCAT) services at Arlanza Elementary School from May 11, 2004 through June 30, 2004.

Fiscal Impact: $7,500.00 (Categorical – Title I)

q. Approve Agreement for Consultant Services – Kisa Grayson: Board approval is requested for consultant services between Kisa Grayson and Alvord Unified School District to provide services from May 10, 2004 through June 25, 2004, for Myra Linn Elementary School.

Fiscal Impact: $2,100.00 (Categorical – Title I)

r. Approve Agreement for Consultant Services – Action Learning Systems: Board approval is requested for consultant services between Action Learning Systems and Alvord Unified School District to provide staff development from May 15, 2004 through June 30, 2004, at Valley View Elementary School.

Amend Agreement for Consultant Services – Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE) – Loma Vista Middle School: Board approval is requested to amend the agreement for consultant services between Parent Institute for Quality Education and Alvord Unified School District for services rendered at Loma Vista Middle School.

Fiscal Impact: Not to exceed $2,100.00 (Categorical – II/USP)

t. Ratify Agreement for Consultant Services – Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE) – Myra Linn Elementary School: Board ratification is requested for consultant services between Parent Institute for Quality Education and Alvord Unified School District for services rendered for Myra Linn Elementary School from February 4, 2004 through March 31, 2004.

Fiscal Impact: $3,500.00 (Categorical – Title I)

u. Ratify Agreement for Consultant Services – Princeton Review: Board ratification is requested for consultant services between Princeton Review and Alvord Unified School District for services rendered at Norte Vista High School on February 17, 2004 and March 3, 2004.

Fiscal Impact: $16,710.00 (Categorical – II/USP)

v. Approve Application for 2004-2005 Community Based English Tutoring (CBET): Board approval is requested for the 2004-2005 CBET application. The application of Intent to Participate includes the acknowledgement of general assurances to be observed under this program. The funding amount is determined by the number of English Language Learners in the District as reported on the April 2004, R-30 Language Census Report multiplied by $30.00 (estimated by the California Department of Education).

Fiscal Impact: $229,560.00 (Estimated revenue – Community Based English Tutoring Program)

w. Approve Personnel Order #18-2003-2004: Board approval of Personnel Order #18 is requested.

Approve Student Teaching Agreement with California State University, Fullerton: Board approval is requested for an agreement between California State University, Fullerton and Alvord Unified School District to allow the placement of students enrolled in the teacher education program into Alvord Unified School District schools or classes.

y. Approve Additional Middle School Teacher Position – Loma Vista Middle School: Board approval is requested of a additional teacher position at Loma Vista Middle School for the 2004-2005 school year. This additional teacher will provide SuccessMaker instruction.

Fiscal Impact: $80,713.92 (Categorical – Title I)

z. Approve Reduction of One Half-Time Middle School Coordinator Position: Board approval is requested to reduce one Half-Time Middle School Coordinator position effective June 30, 2004.

aa. Approve Reduction of One Clerk Typist II Position: Board approval is requested to reduce one Clerk Typist II position. It is the intention of the District to replace this position with a Secretary II position for Child Nutrition Services.

Student Services/Innovative Education Items

dd. Approve Contract with Challenge Day Organization: Board approval is requested of the agreement for facilitation services between Challenge Day Organization and Alvord Unified School District on May 24-27, 2004, to provide two facilitators for “Challenge Day” presentations at La Sierra and Norte Vista high schools, Loma Vista Middle School and during the Youth Leadership Conference which will be held at Arizona Middle School.

Fiscal Impact: $16,000.00 (Rotary Club Donation Budget; RAD Budget)

ee. Approve Agreement for Consultant Services – Howard Educational Consulting: Board approval is requested for consultant services between Howard Educational Consulting and Alvord Unified School District for a two-hour training on Student Safety and Protection legal mandates under AB 537 for the May 18, 2004, Counselors’ Meeting.

Fiscal Impact: $150.00 (Categorical – AB 1113)

ff. Approve Agreement for Consultant Services – Princeton Review – Norte Vista High School: Board approval is requested for consultant services between Princeton Review and Alvord Unified School District to provide PSAT and SAT preparation training for Norte Vista High School in the fall and spring of the 2004-2005 school year.
