2015 Scholarship Application

The Alumnae Panhellenic Association of Washington, DC will award scholarships for the 2015-2016 academic year to qualified applicants. This past year, the Association awarded two scholarships of $1500 each. We hope to award at least the same amount of money this year, and reserve the right to determine how many scholarships will be awarded and in what amount.

The applicant eligibility criteria are as follows: (1) Member in good standing of a fully participating sorority of the National Panhellenic Conference; (2) Rising sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student in fall 2014; and (3) From the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area or attending school in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Applications must be received by February 23, 2015, and no late applications will be considered.

Scholarship recipients will be chosen at the Association’s discretion, based on a combination of scholarship merit and the quality of the application, short essay and recommendation. Incomplete applications or those not in compliance with the instructions provided may be discarded at the Association’s discretion. Recipients will be notified by March 15, 2015. Upon selection of award winners, all applications and enclosures will be destroyed. Winners will be invited to attend the Annual DC Alumnae Panhellenic Award reception at the home of one of our members on Wednesday, April 1, 2015.

A complete application includes the following four parts:

(1) The application form as a cover sheet.

(2) Essay: Your essay must not exceed 250 words, typed on 8.5 x 11 inch paper with 1-inch margins using 12 point Times New Roman font. Essays will be judged on content and form. Please do not put your name or the name of your sorority on or in the essay itself.

Essay Topic: Describe a recent community service project with which you were involved, what the project accomplished, and why the experience was rewarding for you. Choose ONE category below.

Circle one:

A) Greek life, sorority, Panhellenic, collegiate

B) High school, religious affiliation, career program (i.e. World Teach), club/group (i.e. Junior League)

Selecting a category from above allows for students with only one year of undergraduate school, or students who have been out of college for a significant time period, to showcase a recent community service project.

(3) Recommendation: The person preparing the recommendation should be someone who can speak to your social, academic, and/or service achievements and/or contributions as a Panhellenic woman, such as an advisor, supervisor, professor, religious leader, etc.

Please ask your recommender to write a one page letter on your behalf and provide his or her recommendation to you in a sealed envelope signed across the seal. The recommendation should not exceed one page.

(4) A copy of your most recent school transcript (unofficial copies are acceptable).

Photocopies of this application will be accepted.
