THE CHALICE

The weekly Sunday Bulletin of St. John’s Episcopal Church

November 22, 2015

FROM THE DEACON:

This Sunday is the last Sunday of the liturgical year. It is known as the Feast of Christ the King and is an observance of the Church based on Scripture.

"On his robe and on his thigh he has a name inscribed, ‘King of kings and Lord of lords’”. (Revelation 19:16)

“Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” (Matthew 2:2)

“Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom is not from this world.’” (John 18:36)

From these passages, Jesus is given the title of Christ the King.

Most of the Gospel readings this past year have come from the Gospel according to Mark. As we journeyed through Mark, we heard how Jesus healed. We have heard how he instructed his disciples about how to live in the world. We have heard him say things like those who want to be great must be servant of all; of how those who welcome a child in his name welcomes him and the one who sent him. We have heard him ask, “But who do you say that I am?” If we say he is the messiah, how fitting it is to say also that he is King of kings and Lord of lords. And so, we end the year proclaiming Christ the King.

King of my life, I crown thee now;

Thine shall the glory be.

Jennie Evelyn Hussey penned these words in 1921. The words were set to music and became a hymn. Jennie lived in New England and spent much of her life caring for her sister. Her life story indicates that she herself suffered greatly from arthritis. In the midst of a difficult life, Jennie Evelyn Hussey so poetically proclaimed Jesus as king.

This year, we observe the Feast of Christ the King with the events that occurred in Paris still fresh in our minds. We need Jesus as messiah and Jesus as king. We need the hope found only in knowing him as Lord and Savior.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. (Romans 15:13).

Deacon Anthony Jones
