Aloha to our Quilt Passions friends and ohana,

First of all, we want to say thank you so much for the outpouring of concern that has been expressed by so many of you over the past few weeks. Although Kailua Kona is on the other side of the island from the recent and ongoing volcanic activity, it still has been a challenging time for our island community and our hearts go out to those directly affected by the eruptions and lava flow. Your good wishes, thoughts and prayers have been welcome and very much appreciated.

After much consideration we have decided that due to the volcanic activity and related circumstances, we will be modifying our Quilting on the Beach Summer Camp program this year. Our plan is to bring the event in-house and to offer just one class each day, featuring our guest instructors Peggy Gelbrich and Sylvia Pippen. Peggy will teach four one-day classes (Sunday, July 15 through Wednesday, July 18) and Sylvia will teach one two-day class (Thursday and Friday, July 19 and 20). Please see below for the descriptions of the classes that they will be teaching, and samples are on display at the shop. The classes that our local instructors had planned will be scheduled throughout the summer; we will keep you posted as that schedule develops. Please call the store at (808) 329-7475 to register for these classes. (For those interested in staying at the Courtyard by Marriott, Kona Beach Hotel, please inquire aboutspecifics from the Quilt Passions’ staff.)

Quilt Passions wouldn’t be what it is without the support and aloha we have always received from you, our friends and ohana. Thanks for understanding and we sincerely hope that you will join us for these classes if possible and support these teachers in this modified format.

Thanks again and as always, happy stitching (that’s what keeps ussane through all of this, isn’t it?!?),

Sashiko, Sun Prints, and Applique with Sylvia Pippen

(This is a two-day class)

This workshop is guaranteed fun and easy! Discover how to combine sashiko, sun prints and appliqué to make your own one-of-a-kind innovative quilt. Sun printing is produced on a special cyanotype cotton fabric that gives white and blue images on a deeper indigo background. You’ll create your own piece using foliage, paper silhouettes, or designs drawn on transparencies and our Hawaiian sunshine. Sashiko (a traditional Japanese embellishment) is a traditional Japanese embellishment and combines beautifully with cyanotype. We will cover sashiko techniques, how to easily transfer designs onto dark fabric, the best fabric and thread options for sashiko, techniques for perfect stitch length, curves and corners. Explore how to translate photos and drawings into effective sashiko designs and how to combine them with your cyanotype blocks. To add another dimension to your quilt, I also will demonstrate my current favorite easy "Sticky Postage Label" appliqué method.
