Aloha Quilting on the Beach®- Summer Camp Participants,

Karen and I (Robert) want to provide an update for each of you regarding the specifics of each class/event next week. Yes, we realize that some of the information may only relate to a few, but it seems to be the best way for to disseminate important information. Further, it isn’t too late to “add” to your current registration, or encourage a friend to participate.

First, and foremost, we certainly want EVERYONE to have a wonderful time during Quilting on the Beach®Summer Camp2014 – our 1st summer quilt retreat. We want to thank you, in advance, for keeping that positive attitude for which quilters are famous. We will do our very best to accommodate each individual’s specific needs.

When you arrive at Quilting on the Beach®, you will receive a welcome packet which will include a name badge that should be worn at all times during the retreat. This badge will indicate classes/event for which you are registered, and will help us to get to know each other a little better. Past teachers have expressed how helpful the name badges are as well. You can pick up your welcome packet at Quilt Passions beginning Saturday July 19th. We will also bring the welcome packets to the opening campfire on Monday evening.

Supply lists: Hopefully everyone has found supply list posted links, on our website ( which contain the supply lists as well as pre-class preparations if applicable. Some of the instructors also provided specifics for what is contained in their kits – so that you will be prepared with appropriate expectations (if you purchased a kit).

Now, there are some logistical situations that we need to share with you. Our classes will be smaller groups than we’ve had during our February retreat – but that will allow for a more personalized approach. All of the classes will take place in the “Paddler’s Room” near the Honu’s restaurant of the King Kamehameha Hotel. Other events will take place in a couple of different locations. So, let me explain the terminologyand locations of each:

  • Pavilion at the “OldAirport”: This is an outdoor, beach area, with shade and seating. It is a short drive north on Kuakini Hwy (where Quilt Passions is located.) You will pass straight through a 4-way and 3-way stop sign. The road will swing to the left, then to the right – and you will feel like you are driving on a former airport runway or taxiway (you are!). Continue about ½ mile until you locate Pavilion #3 a group area on the left hand-side. We’ll have a banner and one of our cars with the large car-magnetic “Quilt Passions” clearly visible. Restrooms are nearby.
  • “Paddler’s Room”: This is a room (approx. 1,800 sq ft) used as an overflow for the hotel’s restaurant. It’s a spacious room which can handle 60 – 70 people comfortably. It is located just across the walkway from the pool and poolside bar.
  • Quinn’s – almost by the Seameeting room: This is a green building (restaurant) located directly across the street from the King Kamehameha Hotel. It’s a short walk from either the hotel or from Quilt Passions. Parking is best obtained either at Quilt Passions (free parking) or at the hotel. When you first enter the restaurant, turn to the right for an indoor, air-conditioned room.

For those staying at the hotel, who may have difficulty walking to Quilt Passions – please call the store to schedule a pick-up at (808) 329-7475. Although it isn’t far (1/2 block), it is up a bit of a hill – and temperatures can be warm and a bit humid. The shuttle vehicle is clearly labeled with a large “Quilt Passions” sign on the side of the vehicle.

I’d like to address unique aspects of each of the events – feel free to read only those that pertain to classes or events for which you are registered. For those who might be considering adding classes or events, please let us know right away if you would like to “add” a class or event.

All classes will take place in the “Paddler’s Room” (unless noted below) and will start at 9amand go until 12noon; then break for a 2-hour lunch period; then classes resume at2pm and go until5pm. Other special classes, meals, events, and presentations will also be held during the evenings as indicated on the brochure. A daily schedule for all class and events, as well as their locations, will be posted in the window of the “Paddler’s Room” and in the window at Quilt Passions.

Robert and Karen Barry
