ENGLISH II ON-LEVEL COURSE DESCRIPTION:English II is comprised of reading, language skills, composition, and literature. This course includes the study of writing from various cultures through short stories, poems, essays, and novels. Students learn literary forms and elements associated with selections being read and will be able to interpret the possible influences of the historical context on a literary work.

ENGLISH II PRE-AP/IB COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Advanced academics at the 9-12 level in AISD will provide each student with a rigorous and engaging academic program that encourages lifelong learning for a diverse student population.

Dear Pre-AP Parents/Students,

Our local bookstores have just informed us that the Rhetorical Devices: A Handbook and Activities for Student Writers – ISBN# 9781580497657 has very limited availability and cannot be stocked as we originally thought.As a result, we must change our selection to the following: Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms – ISBN# 0199208271. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we want to insure that each and every student has access to the materials we will utilize next year.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

  • Notebook or binder to collect handouts, notes, graded homework assignments and quizzes
  • Pens in blue or black ink
  • #2 pencils
  • Highlighters
  • Notebook paper
  • Composition book (will be provided by teacher and kept in classroom)
  • Vocab workbook (will be provided by teacher and kept in classroom)
  • Pre-AP students will purchase select materials (see summer reading link for specific ISBN numbers)

OPTIONAL MATERIAL TO CONTRIBUTE TO CLASS SET

(contributions of optional material will be rewarded with late homework passes per six weeks—see EXTRA CREDIT)

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Reading responses: Students will be evaluated each class period during the six weeks in either written or oral form in response to the reading assignments.
  • Vocabulary worksheets/quizzes/tests as assigned
  • Reading quizzes
  • Written assessments including short stories, journals, research paper, in-class essays
  • Major assessments such as essays, projects, or exams
  • In-class collaborative work
  • Class discussion/participation
  • Pre-AP Timed Writings

LATE WORK, MAKE-UP WORK, RETESTING: SEE AISD POLICIES IN STUDENT HANDBOOK

EXTRA CREDIT:

  1. Vocab Bonus—see or hear ANY of our vocab words outside of class—write it down in the sentence you heard it, bring it in to class, and gain ten daily points added on at the end of the six weeks. The sky is the limit to how many bonus points you can earn in a six weeks. The Vocab Bonus record…over 200 bonus points!
  2. Homework coupons for class supplies—bring in any of the optional class materials to contribute to our class set and receive a homework coupon to excuse one late homework assignment. Limit=3 supplies/coupons per six weeks. ***This does not exempt you from doing the assignment, but it does exempt you from the 30 point deduction from your homework grade.
