COUNSELING PROGRAM SPECIALIST – NON CREDIT

DEFINITION:

Under supervisionof Dean, Student Services / Counseling and Matriculation this position will perform a professional level of student services work in the area of non-credit student success and support programs. The incumbent will plan, organize, and carry out assigned program, services and academic support responsibilities and conduct needs assessments for student success programs.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

This position,under minimalsupervision,will perform work in the planning and organizing and carrying out the college’s student success and support program and services mission. Supports and collaborates with Student Success and Support programs and services in meeting student needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Develops and implements plans to increase awareness of programs and services among students, faculty, staff, and the community utilizing print, electronic media and social media.
  2. Assists in implementing Student Success Services program including orientations, assessment and student educational planning.
  3. Develops and explains written office and student services procedures.
  4. Provides individual and group orientationsto students regarding all college services.
  5. Assists students withcompleting college forms for admission, transfer and otherstudent services.
  6. Identifies and develops strategies to encourage and academically support at risk students.
  7. Recruits, orients, trains, and monitors peer educators.
  8. Performs routine clerical work.
  9. Advises students on maintaining good academic standing and reaching educational goals.
  10. Develops and implements strategies and procedures to monitor student academic progress.
  11. Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

Socioeconomic conditions;

Fundamentals of interviewing;

Allan Hancock District community resources and services;

Fundamentals of human behavior and the psychosocial factors underlying human behavior;

Basic statistics, research methods, and reporting;

Understand processes, procedures, and requirements of AHC matriculation process;

Ability to read, write, speak and understand Spanish and English.

Demonstrates ability to:

Learn, understand, interpret, and apply laws, regulations, policies, guidelines and procedures;

Plan, organize, and conduct group functions and meetings;

Investigate and research problems, devise solutions and present recommendations;

Present oral and written reports in a clear and concise manner;

Converse fluently inEnglish;

Understand and carry out oral and written directions;

Create and maintain spreadsheets;

Use appropriate software programs.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Psychology, Education, Communication Studies, or related field, OR any equivalent combination of training and experience. (Qualifying experience performing duties closely related to this position may be substituted for the required education on the basis of two years of experience for one year of education.)

Bilingual Spanish/English oral and written communication skills are required.

Working Conditions:

Duties are primarily performed in an office environment;

The incumbent will experience interruptions while performing normal duties during the
regular workday;

This person will have high frequency of contact with staff, students, the general public, social service agencies and other educational institutions.

Physical Demands:

Typically may stand or sit for extended periods of time.

Regularly lifts, carries and/or moves objects weighing up to 10 pounds.

Special Qualification:

A sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of students and staff and students with varying personal challenges or disabilities.
