INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT-COMMUNITY EDUCATION

DEFINITION

Under supervision of the Dean, Academic Affairs plans and organizes a wide range of instructional assistance activities in the Community Educationprogram; promote and value the mission and vision of the college

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Under minimal supervision,the incumbent performs a wide range of instructional support and clerical duties related to the operation of the Community Education program including basic skills, ESL, and vocational education. The incumbent in this position assists Community Educationinstructors with general program operations and administration and may perform assigned instructional development tasks.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Assists Community Educationinstructorsin the preparation of materials and equipment used in the lab and classroom for basic skills, GED, and ESL.
  2. Tutors and assists students on an individual basis and prescribes practice worksheets and/or assignments.
  3. Assists instructors with information related to student attendance on CI track and with paper attendance roster.
  4. Administers quizzes and tests; diagnoses weak skill areas and informs instructors.
  5. Develops supplemental materials as needed.
  6. Assists faculty and students in maintaining a clean and orderly learning environment.
  7. Report computer lab equipment issues to IT Services.
  8. Coordinates learning materials and time with instructors; orders materials and supplies.
  9. Maintains inventory of instructional materials.
  10. Assist with the development of flyers, handouts, and other informational materials regarding the Community Education program.
  11. Assist with intake and assessment processes, as needed.
  12. Track and maintain student assessment records.
  13. Assists with data collection, including but not limited to student attendance and survey feedback.
  14. Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Tutorial techniques for students with diverse backgrounds;
  • Technologies associated with computer-assisted language instruction;
  • Correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation;

Demonstrated Ability to:

  • Work with a high degree of independence and initiative;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
  • Learn, interpret, and apply department policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Education and Experience:

Associate degree in any social science, humanities, English, mathematics, or natural science discipline or in liberal students from an accredited college or university or a high school diploma and two years of full-time paid experience related to tutoring or instructional assistance or working with basic skills students or English language learners.

Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Duties are primarily performed in an office environment, at a desk, or at a computer.
  • The incumbent will experience interruptions while performing normal duties during the regular workday.
  • The incumbent will have contact, in person or on the telephone with management, supervisory, academic and classified staff, and the general public.

Physical Demands:

  • Typically may stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Operates a computer.
  • Communicates over the telephone and in person.
  • Regularly lifts, carries, and/or moves objects weighing up to 10 pounds.

Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and to staff and students with disabilities.
