Pakistan's political history is closely connected with the struggle of South Asian Muslims to regain power after they lost it to British colonialism. In 1906 the Muslim League was established in opposition to the Congress party which it accused of failing to protect "Muslim interests, aims neglect and under-representation." On 29 December 1930, philosopher Sir Muhammad Iqbal called for an autonomous new state in "northwestern India for Indian Muslims". The League rose in popularity through the late 1930s. Muhammad Ali Jinnah espoused the Two Nation Theory and led the League to adopt the Lahore Resolution of 1940, demanding the formation of independent Muslim states in the North-West and North-East of the British Raj. In 1946 the Muslim League contested elections over the question of partition. The 1946 election in the British Raj was essentially a plebiscite among Muslims over the creation of Pakistan. The Muslim League won 90 percent of reserved Muslim seats and the demand for the creation of an independent India and an independent Pakistan received overwhelming popular support among the Muslims of the Raj. August 1947 saw the end of the British Empire's reign in the subcontinent with creation of the Dominion of India (August 15th) and the Dominion of Pakistan (August 14th).

Q.2 In Unit 6, Section B you learnt how to search for information in a text. Scan the following paragraph and answer the questions given at the end. (20)

The first aids to computation were purely mechanical devices which required the operator to set up the initial values of an elementary arithmetic operation, then manipulate the device to obtain the result. Later, computers represented numbers in a continuous form, for instance distance along a scale, rotation of a shaft, or a voltage. Numbers could also be represented in the form of digits, automatically manipulated by a mechanical mechanism. Although this approach generally required more complex mechanisms, it greatly increased the precision of results. A series of breakthroughs, such as miniaturized transistor computers, and the integrated circuit, caused digital computers to largely replace analog computers. The cost of computers gradually became so low that by the 1990s, personal computers, and then, in the 2000s, mobile computers, (smartphones and tablets) became ubiquitous in industrialized countries.

·  What were the first computational devices?

·  How were the numbers represented in the early computational devices?

·  What replaced analog computers?

·  When did the cost of personal computers fall?

·  How did computers become ubiquitous in the industralized coutries?

I opened a book and in I strode.

Now nobody can find me.

I’ve left my chair, my house, my road,

My town and my world behind me.

I’m wearing the cloak, I’ve slipped on the ring,

I’ve swallowed the magic potion.

I’ve fought with a dragon, dined with a king

And dived in a bottomless ocean.

I opened a book and made some friends.

I shared their tears and laughter

And followed their road with its bumps and bends

To the happily ever after.

I finished my book and out I came.

The cloak can no longer hide me.

My chair and my house are just the same,

But I have a book inside me.
