Record maintenancerequired in relation tothe storage of GMOs

All personnel working in laboratories using Genetically Modified Organisms are required to ensure the following:

  • Accurate records about the location of GMOs must be maintained
    Chief Investigators or Laboratory Heads must ensure that adequate records are being kept. Should the staff person responsible for maintaining records leave, the key researcher must delegate the task to another person.
  • Records regarding the location of GMOs should be maintained, such that, in the event of the absence of researchers, the GMOs can be located
    .
  • Storage records and storage arrangements should provide for segregation and identification markings (including OGTR reference number) which will allow retrieval of GMOs in any storage situation
  • Details regarding the register/record of GMOs should be kept locally (within the laboratory).

What happens when the key researcher or investigator, ceases employment or leaves the institution?

Should the first named investigator on any, NLRD, DNIR or DIR intend to leave the institution, the WCHN IBC must be informed in writing prior to the finish date and details of the person being proposed to take over responsibility of the project should be provided including information regarding their suitability to manage the project (ie GMO training and experience).

This information is required so that the IBC can make formal revision of decisions for existing NLRDs (under Regulations 13 and 13A of the Gene Technology Regulations 2001) or the variation/transfer of existing DNIRs or DIRs;
Useful information regarding GMO storage may be found by clicking on the link below

NB: GMO storage record forms should be stored locally (within the laboratory). Following the end of each calendar year, should the investigator wish, they may forward the forms to the Research Secretariat when they provide details of their ongoing projects as part of the annual audit request each February.
