ANGLICAN CHURCH Amersfoort
Fifth Sunday of Easter
9.30am May 14th, 2017 AD Holy Communion
-2-
All Saints seeking to be a church of Up, In, and Out.
Charitable Donations – by the inner door are for Stichting Gave which a Christian foundation enabling Christians to work with refugees and asylum seekers.
Welcome everyone!
This Sunday is part of the Great Fifty Days of Eastertide which form a single festival period in which the tone of joy created at the Easter is sustained through these seven weeks, and the Church celebrates the gloriously risen Christ:
“Triumphant in his glory now,
his sceptre ruleth all,
earth, heaven and hell before him bow,
and at his footstool fall.” (Fulbert of Chartres)
On the fortieth day, there has from the late fourth century been a particular
celebration of Christ’s ascension. The arrival of the promised gift of the Holy Spirit on
the day of Pentecost completes and crowns the Easter Festival
Wonderful to see you and we hope you will enjoy our worship together as we celebrate and adore and praise our incarnate, crucified and risen Lord.
Greeting
Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ with you
All: and also with you.
Allelulia! Christ is risen.
All: He is risen indeed. Allelulia!

All Saints will run some events. It will build in some focused prayer within its Ascension Evening Holy Communion. And we will create space to pray on our 24 hours away in Leusden. We
participated last year with prayer walking in our local area, and hosting a prayer concert (a mixture of contemporary songs, and sections of time for intercessionary prayer, praying in groups or outloud). Dates to be confirmed soon. We not only join something happening across the Church of England and in many places of our world, but we take up this responsibility to pray for our city, our streets, for ourselves to be a missionary people, proclaiming the Good News of Easter in words and deeds, empowered by the Spirit of God.
Men’s Group – June 3rd – 6pm until 10pm (ish) at the home of Peter and Petra Gillies – focusing upon the topic of ‘In’ from our core values. BBQ provided, along with good discussion! Talk to Peter if you’d like to know more. Doesn’t matter if you’ve never been before, come along, and why not bring a friend as well!
Tuesday 6th June – informal worship event led by Paul and Hilary Kyle – 7.30 / 8pm start here at Heilige Geest Kerk.
Pilgrimage to Taize 7th – 16th July: Still are plenty of spaces. All young adults (15-29) of the Anglican congregations in Utrecht and Amersfoort are invited. Friends of people within the age group are also welcome to attend the trip. For more information please contact Angela Berben (, (0651937672) or Andre van der Werk 06211 58 958, ;
Summer Plans? What about New Wine? Saturday 22nd – 28th July in Biddinghuizen (50 minutes away by car). A great week of teaching, sung worship, a variety of speakers on biblical and practical topics. We will camping together as a church group. Speak to Andre and Ninke, Ron and Nienke, Adrian or Danielle Los, or Grant and Jolanda to know more – as they are going. Ron Westerbeek is one of the staff at New Wine Netherlands and would happily share about the vision for New Wine and what happens at a typical conference.
Children’s work. We would like 4 more children’s workers to work with our children aged 4-11 during our Sunday services in our Sunday School. This is to develop our work. Ideally if at least one of these 4 could be a man. Speak to Edwin Mulder if you can offer to serve in this way.
Did you know that we have a weekly newsletter? It is possible to receive this – email and you will be added to the list. It contains notices, weekly prayer points, helpful weblinks. A great way to know what is going on. Speak to Stefan van der Knaap if you’d like to know more about it.
Bible reading notes – now available at the table in front of our noticeboard.
Open Doors Magazines – if you’d like to read more about the persecuted part of our Christian family, there are English language copies below our noticeboard.

Prayers of Penitence (we sit or kneel)
May the light of Christ, rising in glory, banish all darkness from our hearts and minds…
Yet, we are aware that there is darkness within us
Jesus Christ, risen Master and triumphant Lord,
we come to you in sorrow for our sins,
and confess to you our weakness and unbelief.
Silence to reflect
We have lived by our own strength,
and not by the power of your resurrection.
In your mercy, forgive us.
Lord, hear us and help us.
We have lived by the light of our own eyes,
as faithless and not believing.
In your mercy, forgive us.
Lord, hear us and help us.
We have lived for this world alone,
and doubted our home in heaven.
In your mercy, forgive us.
Lord, hear us and help us
Absolution.
May the God of Love and power forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen.
Gloria – (we stand) - (87 87D tune)
Glory be to God in heaven,
Peace to those who love him well;
On the earth let all his people
Speak his grace, his wonders tell:
Lord we praise you for your glory,
mighty Father, heaven’s king;
Hear our joyful adoration
And accept the thanks we bring
Only Son of God the Father,
Lamb who takes our sin away,
Now with him in triumph seated –
For your mercy, Lord, we pray;
Jesus Christ, most high and holy,
Saviour, you are God alone
In the glory of the Father
With the Spirit; Three-in-One!

Prayer for Fifth Sunday of Easter (remain standing)
Let us pray that we may walk the risen life of Christ in glory.
Silence – we bring to God our thanksgivings, our needs and invite him to speak to us, to transform and shape us in this service of worship…
Before Revd Grant prays the Collect Prayer to which all respond. Amen.
Bible Reading: Acts 7:55-end
Throughout Easter Season we read passages from Acts – we hear the effects of Christians, filled with the Spirit, preaching the truth of the resurrection.
But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. ‘Look,’ he said, ‘I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’
At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul.
While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ Then he fell on his knees and cried out, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them.’ When he had said this, he fell asleep.
This is the Word of the Lord:
Thanks be to God.
Psalm 31 (we stand:please say together the words in bold type)
1In you, Lord, I have taken refuge;let me never be put to shame;
deliver me in your righteousness.
2Turn your ear to me,come quickly to my rescue;
be my rock of refuge,a strong fortress to save me.
3Since you are my rock and my fortress,
for the sake of your name lead and guide me.
4Keep me free from the trap that is set for me,
for you are my refuge.
5Into your hands I commit my spirit;deliver me, Lord, my faithful God.
14 But I trust in you, Lord;I say, ‘You are my God.’
15My times are in your hands;deliver me from the hands of my enemies,
from those who pursue me.
16Let your face shine on your servant;save me in your unfailing love.
All: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

Ascension Day Evening Service – 25th May at 8pm – here at Heilige Geest Kerk. We celebrate the Ascension with a service of Holy Communion.
‘Thy Kingdom Come.’Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement, which invites Christians around the world to pray between Ascension and Pentecost for more people to come to know Jesus Christ. What started out as an invitation from the Archbishops’ of Canterbury and York in 2016 to the Church of England has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer.
The Vision for this prayer movement:
- people will commit to pray with God’s world-wide family - as a church, individually or as a family;
- churches will hold prayer events, such as 24-7 prayer, prayer stations and prayer walks, across the UK and in other parts of the world;
- people will be empowered through prayer by the Holy Spirit, finding new confidence to be witnesses for Jesus Christ.

Church Notices -please do note the dates and opportunities in the back pages of our bulletin.
Final Song: Spirit of the Living God (613)
We sing it twice, then it will be played instrumentally, as we pray for a fresh move of the Spirit in our lives, and then we sing it together one final time.

Song: Holy Spirit we welcome you (241)
Gospel reading (we stand) – John 14:1-14
Jesus Christ is risen from the dead. -Alleluia.
He has defeated the powers of death. -Alleluia.
Jesus turns our sorrow into dancing. -Alleluia.
He has the words of eternal life. -Alleluia.
Hear the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All: Glory to you, O Lord
The night before he was crucified Jesus said to his disciples:
‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.2My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.4You know the way to the place where I am going.’
5Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’6Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.7If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.’
8Philip said, ‘Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.’9Jesus answered: ‘Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”?10Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.
11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.12Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.13And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.14You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.’
This is the Gospel of the Lord
All:Praise to you, O Christ.
