WHEN? / WHAT TO DO? / WHO TO CONTACT?
1 / Before first semester registration / Contact Academic Mentor / Academic Mentor
Student will be notified of the name of their academic mentor with the admission decision. Student must contact the academic mentor before the first semester registration. Academic mentor will explore student’s research interests and plan course of study for first semester that student must submit before the enrollment.
2 / During first semester / Select Thesis Chair / Academic Mentor / Thesis Chair
In consultation with academic mentor, student will identify their thesis chair based on their research interests. Student will contact thesis chair and confirm his/her willingness to serve.
3 / Prior to registration for the second semester / Submit Degree Plan to Department / Thesis Chair / GAR
In consultation with thesis chair, student will develop a proposed degree plan. If student is following one of the two concentrations, the degree plan should follow the course requirements for that concentration. The degree plan will be submitted to the GAR by the end of the semester.
4 / During second semester / Select Thesis Committee Members / Thesis Chair
In consultation with thesis chair, student will identify and contact potential committee members and get their approval to serve on the thesis committee.
5 / During second semester / Complete Intent to Produce a Thesis Form / Thesis Chair / Committee / GAR
In consultation with thesis chair, student will complete the Intent to produce a Thesis form* and obtain all necessary approvals. Form must be on student’s file before he/she can take the Comprehensive Examination.
6 / End of second semester / Comprehensive Exam / Thesis Chair / Committee / GAR
Preferably following the completion of minimum 18 hours of classes / Thesis chair, in consultation with the committee members, will set a date for the comprehensive exam towards the end of the second semester.
The comprehensive exam is administered by the thesis chair according to the exam guidelines**. Following successful passing of the exam, the chair/committee members will certify the result on the Comprehensive Examination Completion Form*.
Passing the comprehensive exam is a prerequisite for registering for ARC 6981 and ARC 6983 Master’s Thesis
7 / Following Semesters / Master’s Thesis / Thesis Chair / Thesis Committee
ARC 6981-3 Master's Thesis may be repeated for credit, but not more than 6 hours will apply to the Master of Science degree. / Student must pass the Comprehensive Examination before he/she register for the Master’s Thesis. Credit will be awarded upon completion of the thesis. Enrollment is required each term in which the thesis is in progress.
8 / Final Semester / Final Copy of the Thesis / Thesis Chair / Thesis Committee
Student must submit the final copy of the thesis to the Thesis Chair and Thesis Committee no later than 20 calendar days before final examinations of the semester in which the degree is to be awarded. This copy of the thesis must be the original and, if acceptable, must be signed by the Thesis Chair and members of the Thesis Committee.
Students are also expected to submit a publishable manuscript along with their thesis.

In coordination with thesis chair and committee, student will arrange for a public defense of their thesis.
GAR will be notified with the defense date at least 2 weeks in advance. GAR will make public announcement of the defense date to all faculty and graduate students in the college.
10 / Final Semester / Apply for Graduation / Graduation Coordination
Student must apply for graduation online by the graduate school deadline. Application form* and dates are available at the Department’s website.
11 / Final Semester / Certification of Master’s Thesis Completion / Thesis Chair / GAR
Upon successful completion and public defense of the thesis, thesis chair will complete the Certification of Master’s Thesis Completion and Submittal Documentation* and obtain all necessary signatures. Once completed, form will be filed with the GAR.
11 / Final Semester / Submit Thesis to Graduate School / Graduate School
Thesis will be filed with the UTSA graduate school following the guidelines and deadlines available on the Graduate School’s website.
12 / Graduation / Attend Commencement Ceremony
Student will arrange for cap and gown, and attend the ceremony.
