Dimensional Analysis (D.A) Practice

ALL ANSWERS SHOULD BE REPORTED WITH THE CORRECT # OF SIGNIFICANT FIGURES!

Basic D.A. Conversions: Use common relationships that you should know to solve.

1)  There are 180 days of school. Convert this into seconds.

2)  The moon is 250,000 miles away. How many millimeters is it from earth?

3)  Determine the number of years equal to 8.35 x 106 minutes.

Derived Units & D.A. Conversions: Derived units are formed by a combination of units such as m/s or g/mL. These types of units need to be set up into dimensional analysis properly.

Examples: 65 mph, 0.54 g/mL

4)  The speed of light is 3.0 x108 m/s. What is the speed of light in mi/hr (mph)?

5)  Convert 38.0 km/s into mph (miles/hour).

6)  If a snail moves at a speed of 0.0290mph. What is the snail’s speed in mm/min?

7)  Bill Rogers won the 1979 Boston marathon (26.2 miles) in a time of 2 hours, 9 min, & 7 sec. Calculate his speed in cm/min.

Density & D.A. Conversions: Use the density formula to solve the following. Watch that units match!

8)  The density of silver (Ag) is 10.5 g/cm3. If a sample of Ag has a volume of 43 in3, what is its mass in kilograms? (Hint: The units used in density and volume must match in order to do this calculation!)

9)  A gas has a mass of 3175 g and takes up enough space to fill a room that is 2.00 m by 2.00 m by 5.00 m. What is the density of this gas in g/mL? (Hint: 1 mL = ??? cm3)

10) The 5-gallon containers of water always feel so heavy. Knowing that the density of water is 1.0 g/mL, calculate its weight in pounds. (1 lb = 453.6 g, 1 gal = 4 qts, 1 qt = 0.9464 L)

11) An atom of oxygen has a mass of 2.68 x 10–23g. How many oxygen atoms are in 10 pounds of oxygen? (1 lb. = 453.6 g)
