Course Description:

Algebra 2 With Trig is a course that will cover all of the Algebra 2 and Trigonometry standards but will focus on the problem solving, vocabulary and skills necessary to build a foundation for Precalculus and other higher level math courses. We will use graphing calculators and other technology to see the relationships and patterns throughout the learning process. Students will collaborate often to help their skills in communication of ideas and to create depth of knowledge. During this course we will use material from the McGraw Hill Algebra 2 textbook, NMSI’s Laying the Foundation, and AMSTI (Alabama Math/Science Technology Initiative). I want to build confidence in all of my students in their abilities in mathematics and their own ability to ask questions and take an active part in their learning process. I am always happy to give extra help! Please feel free to contact me at any point in the year!

Classroom Expectations:

My Expectations

-I expect all students to behave in a mature, respectful way towards all teachers, students, and their property at all times.

-I expect students to follow all school rules from the Pelham High School Code of Conduct.

-I expect all students to do the assignments expected of them and to participate in class.

Classroom Policies

Classroom Write Ups

I will have a classroom write up form for instances when certain behavioral expectations are not met.

1st Write Up- Written Warning. 2nd Write Up- Parental Contact 3rd Write Up- Office Referral

The behaviors that could result in a classroom write up will include but are not limited to the following:

-Eating or drinking in the classroom, failing to attempt bellwork or classroom assignments, persistent off-task behavior or excessive talking at inappropriate times, saying inappropriate things in the classroom, and writing on desks/not being respectful of property

Significant Offenses - will result in an office referral and possibly removal from the room:

-Hostile behavior or language toward anyone in the classroom, cursing or talking back in a disrespectful manner to the teacher, defiance, using certain inappropriate words and phrases

-Students will receive 5 opportunities to go to their locker/bathroom for each semester. Students will sign out when they leave and return the room.

Attendance Policy:

  • -This is the biggest cause of failing grades in my experience.Algebra will not make sense if class is missed on a regular basis. You are responsible for material missed, and it is more difficult (and stressful) to teach yourself!
  • Please see the attendance policy in the PHS Handbook. Make sure that excuses are turned in on time!

Course Requirements and Grading Procedures:

-Please check INOW often and refer to the comments on the individual grades (you may not be able to see the comments if checked on certain smartphones)

-Tests and Quizzes 60% Projects, In Class Assessments 30% Practice (Completion Grade) 10%

  • Homework will be checked daily if it is assigned. It is graded for completion, and I will usually go over the work and answers in class.
  • I will give in-class tasks, projects, and assignments to assess students often.

Exam Exemption Policy: Refer to PHS Handbook

Materials and Supplies Needed:

- The only things that you will need in the course are a pencil or pen and a three ring binder or spiral notebook with folder pockets. The students will only be allowed a calculator during the Sequences/Series and Statistics/Probability units. Please let me know if there is a reason that you cannot have a calculator for these units.

Make-up Work Procedures:

-There is a designated table in my room where missed assignments can be picked up and turned in. Makeup homework assignments can be found on the back board in my room. It is your responsibility to check these and discuss your absence with me when you return.

- Homework will NEVER be accepted late unless the student is absent the day it is assigned. Makeup homework must be labeled with student name and date it was assigned!

Makeup Tests- must be made up within 2 weeks of the test date. These can be made up during a skinny period or Tuesdays after school (it is the students responsibility to schedule with me ahead of time)

Digital Procedures/Textbook:

- Students may be given access to school technology during this course to do classroom assignments or to take quizzes. Students are allowed to bring and use their own device for school-related purposes in my classroom with my permission. Students should follow all technology guidelines outlined in the Pelham City Schools Code of Conduct.

·The text used will be the McGraw Hill Algebra 2 book. Each student will be issued a book. This will be used as a reference and for homework purposes. The students do not need to bring their book to class unless I say otherwise (advance notice will be given).

Pacing Calendar: Below is an overview of the units in this course. In parentheses are the standards covered in those units:

Also note- Syllabus is subject to change.

Please detach and return the portion below! It is very helpful if I have a working email address as this is the most efficient way for me to contact during the school day!
