College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM): Algebra Core Connections

Course Description:

Algebra I is the study of the properties and relations of the numbers and variables. The purpose of algebra is to enable one to solve problems that would be difficult or impossible without its methods. The specific topics covered in the course include solving linear equations, inequalities and systems, solving quadratic and exponential functions, exploring functions including sequences, and using regression techniques to analyze the fit models of distributions of data.

  • Tests: 60%
  • Quizzes: 20%
  • Homework/Learning Logs: 15%
  • Classwork: 5%

Tests

Expect 2 -3 tests each quarter. Each student is expected to complete his/her own test without the assistance of team members. Out of respect of classmates it is important to complete tests in a timely manner if you are absent. Ultimately it is the student’s responsibility to stay informed of missed tests.

Team/Partner/Individual Quizzes

Expect 2 – 3 team/partner/Individual quizzes each quarter. Each student will be responsible for his/her own quiz; however, students are encouraged to discuss and check answers with assigned team members or partner before turning in the assessment.


Participation

Each student will be expected to work cooperatively and effectively with his/her assigned team or partner. Important learning takes place during these discussions.

Homework

Expect homework every night. It is the student’s responsibility to stay informed of missed assignments. Please check the handbook for the policy on work missed during an absence. If you need assistance on homework please check I will grade homework using a variety of methods. I will not accept late homework for any type of credit unless you use your one late homework pass for the quarter. Homework will be placed in the front of the room on the computer desk once it is graded a students may pick up their homework. If a student chooses not to pick up their homework it will be recycled daily. A student may also request their homework to be passed back to them individually if they would prefer.

Notebook

Students are expected to keep a 3-ring binder (1 ½ - 2”) with 4 tabbed dividers. The suggested dividers should include  WARM UPS/CLASS WORK,  HOMEWORK,  LEARNING LOGS,

 RESOURCES, and Notebooks are expected to be neat.

Academic Integrity

Each student is responsible for understanding the material and seeking help when he/she does not understand. Students may work together and share ideas and use for help on homework assignments. In addition, the math department offers two math labs during lunch periods and after school tutoring sessions will be available once a week. We expect students to use these resources responsibly. If a student is academically dishonest the BVHS academic integrity policy will be enforced. (Please note: Final work submitted must reflect the understanding and processes of each individual student, and therefore, should have unique content, ways of communication, and/or organization.)

Hall passes/Homework Pass

Each student will receive 3 hall passes per quarter. Use it wisely!! Passes that are not used may be turned in at the end of each quarter for 2 extra credit points per unused hall pass. If hall passes are not used properly, the teacher has a right to refuse passes. You will get one Homework pass per quarter. If homework pass is not used you will receive 5 bonus points at the end of the quarter. Lost or stolen passes will not be replaced.

Power School

A student or parent may access grades by logging onto Power School. Please obtain a user name and password from the guidance office. A link to progress book may be found on the Buckeye Valley website.
