Description:
This course is designed so that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject. As a math department, we are promoting critical thinking. Students will be required to demonstrate that they have the ability to think critically. Therefore, students will need to explain why and how they are doing a math problem throughout the course. The process behind a problem in some cases is more important than the answer. By the duration of this course, each student will strive to meet the following Mathematical Practice Standards regarded as essential by the Common Core Standards for Mathematics. They are as follows:
Ø Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
Ø Reason abstractly and quantitatively
Ø Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
Ø Model with mathematics
Ø Use appropriate tools strategically
Ø Attend to precision
Ø Look for and make use of structure
Ø Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Absences:
It is the responsibility of the student to get missed work from the teacher if absent from class. If absent on the day of a formal assessment, it must be completed within 3 school days of returning. Grades from days you are absent (including test grades) will be entered as a zero until they are made up, at which point you will receive full credit. There are missing work folders in the back of the room – anything handed out in class will be in those folders, it is your responsibility to obtain both the assignment and notes that you have missed.
