“Stitchy” Guide Sheet

This is your “Stitchy” guide sheet. A guide sheet is a set of directions for completing a sewing project. Read all directions and watch all class demonstrations. Grade yourself as you work and show your work to the teacher for a grade before you continue on to the next step.

*ALERT* Stitchy cannot be removed from the classroom without teacher permission.

Students will not receive credit for any ungraded work when the project has been removed from the class.

5. Buttons(Steps A-J)
2-hole Button:A. Double your thread, as demonstrated by the teacher.
B. Starting from the back of your fabric, come up to the right side of Stitchy where the button eye is to be placed. Your needle should go through one of the button’s hole. C. Place a toothpick across the top of the button. D. Sew with thread going over the top of the toothpick and down in the opposite buttonhole. Do this at least 8 times. E. Remove toothpick. F. Poke the needle so thread comes under button and tightly wrap the thread around the stitches 8 times, creating the thread shank. G. Poke needle to back of fabric and make a secure knot. H. Trim thread.
4-hole Button:I. Consider the four-hole button like two sets of the 2-hole button. Do not stitch in an “X” across the top of the button.
J. Make the shank as described above after you have sewn 2 pairs of stitches through the holes of the button. (Create parallel stitches.) / Student Comment:

6. Embroidery Stitches(Steps A-P)
Whipped Running Stitch:A.You will need two colors of embroidery floss, each with 3 strands. (Teacher will demonstrate how to use embroidery floss.)
B.On the left ear, with the first color, sew at least 7 small, even running stitches. C.Secure your floss at each end with a knot. D.Change to the second color floss and weave it under the running stitches. E.Make sure there is a knot at the start and end of your stitches on the wrong side of your fabric.
Outline Stitch:F. On the right earlobe using embroidery floss, you point your needle back towards the previous stitch. G.The thread is kept to the left of the needle after picking up a small piece of fabric. H.Be sure that with each stitch you consistently move your thread to the same side of your work.
I. A minimum of 7 outline stitches should be completed.
Chain Stitch:J. Use 3-strand embroidery floss to make small, neat stitches to create the bear’s nose on the mask. K. Follow the demonstration, knowing you start the chain stitch by going up and then down into the fabric in the same spot. L. Sew the chain stitch in a “J” shape, then create another hook going to the right of the “J”.
Blanket Stitch:M. When all stitching above is done, pin the front and back together matching the notches. N. Cut off the notches. O.Begin at one large dot with embroidery floss and sew in the direction of the arrow. (Make sure you hide your knot insideStitchy.) P.Stitch with small even stitches and STOP at the second dot. Do not tie off or cut thread-leave the thread on the needle. / Student Comment:
