TRANSPOSING TIPS AND HELP

Steps1

Understand that the C note on the trumpet or any other BЬ instrument (such as the BЬ clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor sax, or soprano sax) sounds like the BЬ below it on a C instrument (such as the piano).

Learn that transposing from C to BЬ requires moving the note up a whole step. 3

Using the table below, transpose the notes. Find the note you are starting with in the C column, then go directly across to see what it is pitched in B flat. Or vice versa, if you are going from Bb to C. 1

Then to play it in the correct key, you need to add two sharps. So if you are in C major (for a trumpet), you would go to D major by adding two sharps to the key signature. If you are in B flat major, you would still add two sharps, and the sharps would cancel out the flats, so you would end with a blank key signature (C major). In this case going from a B-flat instrument to read a C instrument or piano music, this makes it easy to transpose on the fly for easier songs without having to rewrite the score.
