Alburgh PTSA Minutes
September 13,2010
Meeting opened at 3:35 by President Wendy Savage.
Present were: Wendy Savage, Stephanie Waters, Allison Alexander, Robert and Almira Miller, Polly McFarlin, Charity Darby and Lisa Arnold.
Treasurer's Report
Checking $ 4,278.22
Savings$10,281.40
Stephanie willverify Playground Funds and Regular PTSA Funds at the next meeting.
Correspondence
Wendy shared a letter receivedfrom the Alburgh School Board thatthanked the PTSA for their efforts on the new playgroundandstressed its enhancement to the community.
Natalie Prairie sent a proposal suggesting that the PTSA organize a Trunk or Treat Halloween event. A Trunk or Treat event is an organized, safe way for childrento trick or treat in a designated place (away from traffic) out of trunks of cars of people who choose to participate. She even set up a tentative schedule for set up, etc. Those present thought this was a great idea. Charity Darby volunteered to contact Natalie to discuss the details of location, etc. and she will bring information to the next meeting.
PIRC
Kelly Poquette, our resident Parent Information Resource Center coordinator, wasn't able to attend, but sent information about a Spaghetti Dinner to be held for families on September 22nd and an ongoing Cooking/Nutrition Class currently being held.
Request for Funding
Polly McFarlin presented a written request from the Intermediate teachers, Sarah Demulder (Middle School LA teacher) for funds for a visiting author.She is Kate Messner, a local New York State teacher, who is an author of children's fiction. The funds requestedwill pay for an Intermediate session and Middle School session complete with book signing. The teachers have also plannedan accompanying leaf press in clayart project (no extra funds are needed ) to enhance the experience. Funds requestedare $532.00, which represents 2/3 of the total as Isle La Motte is covering 1/3 fora visit to their school on the same day. After a positive discussion,Lisa motioned to grant this request for funding.Charityseconded.All in favor andmotion carried.
Playground Update
An X-Wave, ateeter totter-like piece of equipment which can hold many children,will be installed soon. The next step includes landscaping the current playground area and purchasinga trash receptacle and Memorial benches. Allison will contact a landscaper she is familiar with to come and give a presentation. A discussion was held about transplanting local trees, etc. Wendy and Lisa will order a trash receptacle and benches for families who have donated Memorial funds.
Fundraising
Information about theGreat American Opportunities fundraiser and kick-off were discussed. Other fundraising opportunities discussed were an adult dance, a family fun day, andan antique show. Wendy shared that Adam Vincelette, a parent and a vocational teacher at BFA, said that for the cost of the materials, his woodworking class would make us a moveable concession stand. Members present thought this was a great idea with only some reservations about vandalism, etc., but no decision was made. A discussion was held about the importance of developinga partnership with local non-profit organizations such as the Alburgh Historical Society.
